Triumph TR6 - Rear hub bearings

So, the rear hub bearings... I figure I might as well start outboard and work in. Rimmer Bros. offer reconditioned assemblies for aprox. $200 each while Moss has the bearing kits for a little over $50. Haynes says its a job to be left to a shop. Any thoughts? Can I do it with a vise and a large wrench set

I thought I saw other sources - maybr TRF? Not too sure whether the shipping will eat you up with Rimmer... But yes - that is one job best left to professionals!

Yes, Roadster sells rebuilt rear hubs on an exchange basis. Depending on where you live, you may also have a local source. For example, if you live in Fort Worth you go see Jeff over at British Auto Specialist and have the work done in his shop. In the Atlanta area, you can go see Tom or Lamar at Atlanta Imported Auto Parts and have the work done in their back shop.

TRF will do it for about the same cost. Unless you have access to a mechanic who has the specific jig for these puppies, don't do it!!

BTW--What makes you think they're bad? If after removing them from the trailing arm, do they spin freely (not good)?

Want to add to be sure they ARE bad. One of mine was real loose (and everyone seemed to agree that any looseness was a death knoll). However, popped em out and bearing turned smooth as silk, so adjusted them up with the two big nuts in back and as they still felt smooth, reinstalled. After several thousand miles now, no noise, no play - all seems well.Is also a very simple job.Worth a try unless you are certain.

Bryn--You can fab your own hub puller and DIY the job. In fact, there is a non-Churchill puller and rebuild kit up on ebaY today being auctioned by "worldcarz".

I actually took the hub(s) out and its wierd: it spins fine. Initially I was certain it was the differential but after installing a new(used) one courtesy of Jim D, the noise persists and has become worse. Definitely the rear end, the bearings are the only other thing spinning back there. The universals all appear good too. So I'm going to start out board and work in. Its time they were all replaced anyway.

I'm hoping Wilf at "Hub Auto" off Woodbine can install the new bearings for me. If not, I'll try to find recondition ones somewhere in NA. I probably could take a whack at it myself but, you guys have scared me off. I saw the puller on ebay but its almost the same proce as a recondition unit.

Bryn-There is a person that has an ad on the VTR site that rebuilds hubs for $175 exchange with a one year warranty. The business is called "The Axleworks" and is located in North Carolina. I think several people on this board have recommended him.
