Triumph TR6 - Removal of Black Bumperettes??

Need help guys. Anybody have experience removing the black boobies from a '75 or '76? My question is after I take them off do I need a spacer to go between the bumper bracket and the body mount? The mount for the boobies looks about 1/4" to 3/8" thick so it would seem once that's off you'd need a spacer so that the side-mounting bolts will still line up. If anybody has done this I'd appreciate some advice. Remove the bumpers from the car and disassemble or do it in situ??

Thanks,
Bob

I removed mine last year. You will need a spacer of roughly 3/8" thickness. I used a couple of pieces of a rubber pad I had lying around. I cut it into a square the same size as the bracket (about 2 1/2" square), drilled a hole and installed it between the bumper and the body.

I completely removed the bumper when I did it as it gave me the chance to clean the inside parts of the bumper that are hard to reach while on the car.

Cheers,
Martin in frozen, snowy Ottawa.

Thanks Martin. It did seem like a spacer would be needed and I had the same idea - a rubber pad. Will give that a go but will try to leave the rear bumper on the car. As I recall from reassembly, the bolts on the rear were a real bugger to get at. The front one is easy.

Here are a shot of my "pontoonless" '76. The PO fabricated a couple of 3'8" aluminum spacers for the rear bumper and used plastic plugs from a VW to fill the front bumper holes. As you can see the license plate bracket is also gone and finished with the same plastic plug treatment.

DW....
What did you do on the rear? Can you upload a picture?

DW,
Really looks nice....but did you notice that someone vandalized your license plate? ;)

looks great, of course the purists will mock us for doing this...was a spacer required for the rear bumper as well?

Looks like there are a few late model TR6 owners who wished that they had a 71 model!

Aw what the heck.....

Yup it appears that the older you are the better you look....kinda like maturing with age:)
Thanks Berry... I am sure I will receive flack on this one.

DW:

Thanks for the pics/info. Very nice & clean looking without the bumperettes. Hope there's no rust or chafing under mine and really hope after I get 'em off that some old f@rt doesn't back into me in the family sedan! Not gonna bite on that one Rick; like the clean look. I also removed the luggage rack for painting and did not replace it after.

Ha Bob
Just trying to have a little fun.
When I was ready for the final trim-bits...like the luggage rack, I did a visual survey and every single person said the car looked better without the rack. I gave it away to an MG owner.

On the other hand, if you want to go camoing in your TR6............

And it leave a lot of room in the trunk if you use a big enough duffle!

It's not just luggage you can put on a rack...

Great pics guys. Love that Mallard Rod! Very sharp - nice wheels too. BTW - I still have the rack and the four holes in the trunk to prove it. Just popped in 4 little black plastic buttons I got at the auto trim shop. Hardly noticeable but still reversable for camping, long trips, etc.

Rod, those wheels look nice fron the pic you showed. Do you have another shot of them and what are they? Can,t see real well from this pic.

Hello,

You gave me the pep to remove them on my '75 TR6. A positive aspect is at least 30-40lbs less on the car...

I have a question:

My TR6's rear bumper center piece need to be replace. But unfortunately it is not available. I saw two center, one for '69-'72 and the other for '73 model. What is the difference and will it suit my 1975.?

Thank you,

Rob,
They are Revolution Alloys, made in the UK. I purchased from Rimmer Bros in late 2002, they shipped to Boise for about $730 US. They have gone up a bit, $770 US, plus shipping. I got the 15X6. At the time I couldn't buy from a US supplier for less than $1000. Go figger.

Your image brings a question to mind.
Bob, that is a good idea for the rack..being able to remove and install it at your desire.

Rick,

Well spotted. The rack is just sitting on the trunk for the photo. I like the look of the luggage rack but I haven't installed it as it was given to me and:
a) I don't have the feet for it;
b) I'd prefer the larger one with 6 bars instead 5.
I think the one I have came of an MGB.
I also have 2 kids in car seats now so I'll need a bigger rack anyway if they want to come along :-). (Or a Stag).

Not the question I had in mind (I did not notice it was not attached).
I was kinda woundering if it might not be a little windy up there for your son or daughter going down the road:)

DW

What "plugs from a VW" did you use to fill the bumperette holes?

bob
Bob Craske

Bob, unfortunately the only information I have is that they came from a VW Westphalia van, actual location unknown. Generic ones may be available at an auto supply store hopefully.

Cheers,
Dave
