Triumph TR6 - Removing POR 15

This may be what our British friends call "a blinding glimpse of the obvious", but for those who may not know...don't experiment with POR-15 on ANYTHING which you do not seriously intend to paint. The stuff is harder to remove than powder coating. Bead blasted my one brake drum for over a hour and still have some to go to remove enough to then repaint with the Eastwood thinner paint. John at POR tells me his methelyne choride stripper will do the job, but I would have thought that bead blasting would be easier. Just a caution for those who are thinking of using this stuff in the future.

Contrary to what my wife thought, I did not paint my fingernails grey on purpose. Since bead blasting was out of the question, I had to let it grow out.
Don from Jersey

I suggested to my 19 year old son that he paint the frame of his Jeep with it. I should have known better than to just let him have at it. Despite my warnings, I had it all over my driveway - no drop cloths, cardboard, nothing. I tried everything including a 3000 psi pressure washer. I eventually had to get down on my hands and knees (he escaped my wrath by leaving for college)and grind it off with my angle grinder. Now I just have grey spots instead of black ones. Fantastic stuff if it ends up where you want it to.

Well, there's another use for it! Driveway paint.
Tom

Tom, I think the company that makes it also makes a cement paint, or maybe they just say you can use POR-15 on cement.

I was really careful with the stuff when I did my frame. Lots of newspaper on the garage floor, and I wore long sleeves and latex gloves. If you get at it right away, their solvent will remove it. If it sets, it is really, really set.

And, for those considering using it, be sure to order their solvent and get it off your skin real fast. I tried to kind of scrub at a couple of spots with a solvent soaked rag and it looked like I had a chemical burn for a couple of days.

But it looks really great under there!

Doug, how much prep is required before putting por on?

Prep is significant if you do it right. Cleaner, metal etch, POR and Chassis Black. Takes a weekend.
Don from Jersey

Shawn,
According to Don's note...I guess I don't do it right!! I bead blast to clean metal and blow the piece clean with an air hose or wash it in a CLEAN parts washer and blow dry with the hose and PAINT the sucker!!

I know that POR wants to sell you their metal clean and etcher and etc, but they also say paint over rust!! I painted my drive shaft. To prepare it, I taped the collar to prevent the blast media from getting inside where it'd wreak havoc with the lubricated slide joint, but then blasted the rest to bare metal and blew it clean of media and painted it. It looks great. This stuff flows like nothing I've ever seen. You can't screw it up. Just brush it on, make sure you have complete coverage and let it dry, preferrably in a dust free environment cause it will attract and intrap dust particles.

I'm thinking of doing the chassis with it rather than have it powder coated. Might be able to get better coverage of all surfaces.

IMHO, of course.
