Triumph TR6 - replacement starter

I've had 3 starters replaced in 4 months, 2 were bad right out of the box. I don't know the manufacturer (probably Lucas, right?) but they all came from NAPA parts. Current plan is to try another vendor/brand, but I seem to remember that a common (GM perhaps?) gear reduction starter bolts right on to a TR6 (1976, if it matters). I searched the archives and drew a blank. Is my memory playing tricks again?

There are other GR starters out there. If someone knows of a other spec GR starter that will fit it would be a great coo.

I don't know of a bolt-on out of the box from another car. It's too bad we're getting to be parts replacers rather than repairing the parts. Maybe there's a starter repair place (electric motor specialist) in your area that will work on them. I wonder what the problem was with your NAPA parts. Probably solenoids, if my experience is any indication.

There are a couple of guys that sell GR starters on ebay for about $180. They seem to be the same as the one on my Dodge minivan, maybe different gears or something, I don't know. The sellers must have a machine shop, as they are supplied with an adapter plate that allows different positioning (which way is up). One guy uses (rebuilt) Bosch and the other (new) Denso. I saw an article using Mitsubishi Montero starter (looked the same as the Denso on my van), and gave specs for making an adapter, which is what the above mentioned sellers do. So with a little research, you could make your own adapter. Or just order one from the usual TR parts sources. They're a little more than the ebay prices, probably because the TR parts guys buy them from the same ebay sellers. Support your TR parts suppliers, we'd have useless cars without them.

Here is a link I came across on one of my ramblings.
It refers to converting a Isuzu starter to a GT6, which uses the same starter as the TR250. Should do the trick if you care to have the adapter made.
Note-I have not tried this yet, but when my current starter gives up I will be ready.

Moss Sells a GR starter PN 541-555 for $257.95 with the statement that "some modifications may be required". TRF also sells a GR starter, PN GRS104 for $199.95 with the stataement "complete and ready to install". I think both are on sale at this time???

The original starter has lasted 30+ years and done its job very well. If it ever dies there is another 30 years old Lucas waiting to take its place.

Hello Everyone, My starter was acting up this last summer to where I gambled and took the thing apart and cleaned the commutator with some light sandpaper until it was shiny copper again. Then I cleaned the carbon off the brushes and after reassembly it hasn't failed me yet. Remember to take a hacksaw blade (broken in half) and clean out the gaps on the commutator. My point is that it may be just a dirty electrical connection where the brushes ride on the commutator. Brushes are cheap and you can save alot of money if this is all thats wrong with it. You'll dig it! Mark

CAR11 has a ht starter, he is a pretty straight dealer on ebay too

Bob Craske

the Isuzu Trooper GR starter is what you are looking for I converted to this GR last summer out of the box I have the 2.5 TR6 motor in my GT6. It cost me about 79.00 over the counter at Napa the only mod I needed to make was to move the position of the mounting plate two slots to the right on the starter to get the right angle for the mounting bolts and I needed to make a jumper wire for the internal relay. The starters that are listed on Ebay are the same as offered by Isuzu so buy over the counter and save you money.

Jeremiah - out of the box as in you didn't need to buy or make an adapter plate?
Tom

Has anyone dealth with car11 or www.tr6car11.com??

his stuff seams nice, just wondwering if anyone has had dealings with him. I see he is selling rebuild starters, wonder how they will stand up

ken jackson

Yes no adpter mods needed just moving the existing plate over two spaces to fit the mounting bolts to the backing plate on the motor and making a jumper wire for the internal solinoid.
Jeremiah Randolph

Thanks Jeremiah. Any more info is welcome.

Ken, these starters are very dependable, I have one that looks the same on my minivan. I don't know what the differences are yet between the Trooper one and mine, but the main unit is obviously the same. At 120,000 miles, mine started to fail. It was the contacts at the end of the travel of the solenoid that were the problem. One gets a step worn on it, and the power no longer gets to the motor. The contacts are available and cheap, and easy to replace. I expect the rebuilds are cleaned and the contacts replaced, that's all that goes wrong.

So if you can find one in a junkyard from a Trooper cheap, get some contacts and there ya go.
Tom

Jeremiah,

Are you referring to the plate on the starter itself? So in otherwords just unbolt the mounting plate from the starter and reposition it in relation to the starter body?

Doug

Jeremiah,

Another question, is there a year or engine type for the Isuzu Trooper that one should ask for.
Doug Campbell

Yes that is correct the thick Alum. plate on the starter itself and no I do not have a year or motor size.
Jeremiah Randolph

The link above and here:

http://www.teglerizer.com/triumphstuff/73gt6br_tropperstarter.htm

Does mention a year and engine size. But he made or modified an adapter plate, which does confuse me a little. Sorry if I'm dense.
Tom

OK now my head is spinning, my starter looks the exact same as that one however mine does not have the same mounting setup. This one just has 2 "fixed" mounting ears, mine has a large ring with holes around it that is fixed to the starter with allen head flat screws that can be removed and the ring moved to adjust to match the mounting holes on the motor end plate. The confusion may lie in that I actually did not use a Trooper starter I only found out about the starter AFTER I made the mistake of purchasing a real GR starter from a guy on Ebay for way too much money and then found out that the Trooper starter is the same as the "so called" real GR starter. However for the difference in what I payed for mine and what a over the counter parts house charges one could ditch the eared end piece in favor of making a ring or even having one made and still be ahead price wise.
Jeremiah Randolph

Aha..that clears things up a lot. Thanks for that, Jeremiah. I think I paid about $5 for solenoid contacts from a guy on ebay, if yours ever does the "click click" thing instead of turning the engine. Doing that will save the difference you paid for the adapter.
Tom

Hello,

I bought a starter from Tr6car11 as told Bob, and I don't know if it is a Trooper model. There is an adaptor plate with it near 1/2". I think it is a nice set-up, but from what car model does it come, I don't know an the dealer didn't say a word about it.

J>G> - Is there a number on the starter itself?

DON KELLY

Don,

Unfortunately no, I just see ND that indicates jap. origin. The Al adaptor bracket is well made.

Jeremiah,
" It cost me about 79.00 over the counter at Napa the only mod I needed to make was to move the position of the mounting plate two slots.."
What is the NAPA part number? One of you chaps in the US needs to go to NAPA and check this out (please). This is a lot less expensive than $260.00!
Definitely info for the CD.
