Triumph TR6 - Replacing timing cover

I bought a chrome timing cover and purchased the inner oil seal and timing cover gasket. It seems pretty straight forward to replace it, but is there any thing that could make the replacement difficult or a problem. I am also replacing the water pump and fan extension. Thanks
Bill Kinney

Bill--The timing cover R&R is straight-forward. Your biggest hassle will be breaking the crank bolt loose and removing the harmonic damper pulley. Also, note where the bolts and pan head screws go as your remove them. I would apply Hylomar to both sides of the gasket.

Also, check your timing chain/tensioner and sprockets while you're in there.

Thanks Rick, Is there a trick to unloosening the crank bolt. I don't have a wrench that fits it and I was going to buy one just so I don't strip it. Any idea what size?

After you remove the radiator, you'll note that the bolt securing the fan extension to the crankshaft is a special one. It's points are rounded; be sure to use only a 6-point socket (sorry, I don't recall the size . . . . maybe 1"??). The preferred method to loosen the special bolt is with an impact wrench. If that doesn't work, you'll have to hold the fan extension with a pipe wrench and use a big breaker bar on the special bolt. You'll also have to remove the cross-tube and possibly the steering rack U-bolts to push the rack forward enough for the pulley to clear. You may need a gear puller to remove the pulley; I was able to shimmy it off with a big screwdriver after a good soak with PB Blaster. Don't forget to put a new oil seal in your fancy chrome cover. Good luck!

I had my engine out and on an engine stand to undue the crank fan extension bolt. I thought I was in trouble......no tranny to help me:) I do not recall the wrench size but it will come off.....you have the tranny to help you.

Heck just replace the timing chain and tensioner...$15.00. MAKE SURE the gears go back on as they came off.

In one of the online sites they sell an alloy pump and cover. Check it out.
