I was traveling down the motorway this morning and a rock truck was droping bits of it load behind it and yes I was the the gent behind him and you guessed it I took one in the headlamp so I am now in need of a replacment unit a North American type ORIGINAL Lucas PL 700 Tri-Pod the bulb survived but the glass unit now sports a large crack and hole can anyone assist me in a replacment unit Thanks......

I bought brand new ones in 1963 for my 1958 TR3A. The total was about $16.00 for both. I still have the bill. About 3 years ago, one of the tripods which hold the reflector in front of the bulb fell in due to corrosion. So I bought 2 GE halogens and installed tham till I could find out where to get a new (or newer) one. There is a shop here in Montreal that has a number of them and he is asking about $150.00 each. I have also seen them in the US at autojumbles (like at Roadster Factory Summer Party) for about the same price. That's why I'm still running with the GE halogens.

Thanks I see that Ebay has several new repro pairs for about $75 US and I too have seen them go at swap meets for north of $150 US EACH. I was given this original factory pair in trade and would like to find an OE replacment for a fair price and not need to contact my banker for a loan just to get a headlamp replaced. If you ever feel the need to free up some shelf space I have a warm home here in the US for your single lamp Don........Jeremiah

I too have the winter sale catalog Thanks but I am looking for an ORIGINAL FACTORY replacment not a repro of any kind and if you will look closly the 49.95 lamps are "knock offs" not even true Lucas tri-pod repro's they do not have a "PL" in the center of the lenses but I think some place else in the catalog you can buy cute little stickers to make them look like the real thing.

Jeremiah:

I have a pair of PL 700 Tripods and don't know if they are original or not but somewhere on this BBS is info describing how to tell the difference. I could not find the thread in archives but have seen it before. The Lucas emblem fell off inside one of them and while trying rig a gizmo to glue it back on I separated the reflector from the tripod and can't get it back together. I replaced the set with a set of off the shelf halogens so I have one in relatively good shape I would part with for reasonable $$. All I can tell you about the lamps is that the back is sort of a gray or pewter color and a green and white sticker affixed indicates "Use Genuine Lucas Bulbs / 416 12V car or 417 12 V Car". The "Tripod" Lucas PL emblem is chrome metal with black enamel - very nice quality. If you can find the thread and look at the specs and are interested just e-mail me and we can discuss. If I can figure out my kids' digital camera I could get a pic for you. I'm not looking to make a killing on this and would be glad to help out if what I have is what you want.
P.S. Maybe somebody can point Jeremiah to the right thread for research purposes.

Cheers,
Bob
