Triumph TR6 - resurfacing dashboard

I ordered walnut veneer to resurface my dashboard. The new veneer came with an adhesive already coated to back side. To apply this veneer you are to simply lay on board and iron. I would have preferred to purchase without this adhesive. Hindsight.

Has anybody applied using this method and was it acceptable?

Wool or cotton??? What does that mean?

Splain yourself Mr Kelly.

I think he meant that he didn't cotton to the idea of the adhesive, but he may be pulling the wool on you.

It's not unusual to get veneer this way anymore. My FIL & I did some work to an oak table a number of years ago. The trim veneer had the heat activated glue on the backside. It worked out rather well.

I'm not 100% positive, but believe that this adhesive is really nothing more than dried carpenter's (yellow) glue.

If you get a bubble in the veneer when using carpenter's glue, just use your wife's iron on it. It will stick back down and will be very flat. Iron temperature isn't too critical, I've set the heat control anywhere from the middle to 3/4 of the way up (can you tell I don't do much ironing?)

Place a piece of plain cotton between the iron and the veneer. Don't use synthetic as it may melt! Don't make the iron too hot or dwell too long in any one spot, you may scorch the wood.

Since the adhesive may be water based, I'd stick with a solvent or oil finish vs. a water based finish. Otherwise you may have trouble with the veneer lifting about an hour after applying your finish. Don't ask me how I know!

To change the subject slightly - I've seen a lot of articles state that contact cement is the adhesive of choice. Associated photos usually show 3M's Super 77 spray adhesive. This probably works very well for home / interior projects, but personally I've had dismal results when used for automotive projects as it seems to let go after 3-4 years. Not sure if it's heat, humidity or a combination of the two. Super 90 may work better, but I'm not about to try it to find out, it's enough work as it is.

I was wondering what setting for the iron. Boy,sure can tell who does the ironing in this group!!

What is an iron?
Rick Crawford

I thought you used it to solder!

It's not with what I swat at a little white ball?

Is it not the same stuff my doctor says I should get more of?
Rick Crawford

C'mon guys, this ia a car board. An iron is used to change your tires. There's one supplied in every car from the factory. Sheesh......
