Triumph TR6 - Reverse light wiring TR6

Anyone know how the reverse switch wiring goes? I have the trans cover off and the wiring wasn't even hooked up. Apparently my dad had a reverse light switch put in and it's under the glove box. I have no idea where to put the connectors from switch on the trans to the car. Is it possible that the wires from the replacement swtich was re-routed? Any help would be appreciated.

Here is link to wiring schematics. Look for your year of TR6. You do not mention year of car or if you have OD or not.

There are many variations of the tranny top cover. The reverse lamp switch can be found on the top or side of the tranny top cover...depends on year and OD or no OD. The switches can be unscrewed from the cover. You should OHM it out to see if it works (closes). Also OHM it out when installed in the top cover. It may not be "hit" by the lever that is suppose to contact it to activate that switch when the gear shift is put into reverse. There are also shim washers that adjust the height of the switch. Use as required to raise or lower the switch to its contact point.

Thanks, Rick. I have a 72 TR6 with no overdrive. I just can't seem to figure out where the wire connects to. The wire is there on the trans, just hanging loose and frayed. It is connected to the swtich and everything there looks good. Does it connect to another wire under the dash or something? Thanks.

Yes the wire goes back up to the dash harness and should go into a old bullet style connector. The wire comes out of the tranny cover at the front of it at the inside of the fire wall behind the radio. This wire then disappears in the dash wiring harness. So look for an emply bullet connector hanging down.
Hope that makes sence to you:). It has to end up at the brake switch at the brake pedal.

You are welcome. I would still have a look at the switch as I suggested. As you can appeciate, you have the tranny exposed and it is not any easy thing to do again. Also, since you are there, remove the spedo cable and lubricate the end with grease.

Rick, this is a stupid question, but I'm totally unfamiliar with the kinds of greases to put on in various places of the car. No one really explains that, especially to me, the novice. What kind of grease are we talking about?

There is no such thing as a stupid question when it comes to TRs.
Any grease will do. If you have a grease gun, squirt a little on the finger and apply it to the drive "dog".
Wheel bearing grease is typical. White lithium...what ever but not WD40.
A grease gun can be used in most places in a TR except the trunions and the steering rack. These are OIL!! lubricated with a grease gun...yes a grease gun. See, not a stupid question.

Rick, thanks very much. So just so I'm straight, most of the things people talk about when "greasing" things up are wheel bearing grease (white lithium - which I should look for at my local auto parts store?). I read about the trunnions and found that what you say about using oil is correct. I do have a grease gun, so I guess I'm on my way. Thanks again.

Just make sure it says wheel bearing grease if doing wheel bearings in a grease gun or U joints. White lithium is not typicaly used for wheel bearings. Why I mentioned it is because it can be purchased in a small tube or tub and would work ok for the spedo. Simply, a tube is easier to deal with in this little application. If you go get wheel bearing grease then just use it. Personally, I find there are many times I need just a little bit of grease for something and a tube (or tub) is real handy especially if you need one hand to hold the part to be greased:)
