Triumph TR6 - ring gear install
|Hi just bought a steel flywheel for my six.I assume the sloped side of the ring gear faces the gearbox [clutch side]|
I am sure someone will tell me I am wrong, but it seems to me that the slope should be on the starter side, to ease the starter engaging?

The starter ring gear is basically part of the flywheel so it is more a question of which way does the flywheel go.
The flat side of the flywheel goes towards the clutch....away from engine block. The pressure plate and clutch plate get mounted to that side of the flywheel. A clutch alignment tool is used to center the clutch plate in the pressure plate. Failure to do this will result in never getting the spline of the tranny into the clutch.
I agree with Alistair. Rick the ring gear is separated from flywheel. It must be put together after flywheel was some time in a freezer and ring gear in an oven. But very often the finish product didn't last. It need some spots of arc weld to stay together and you have to balance flywheel by an expert.

Agree that the ring gear is seperate or better said can be seperated. Was not really aware that one could buy the ring gear only. Not something I would do.
If Ian's is seperate, well....good luck Ian and I would agree the slope should be on the starter side.

Ian, is the ring gear mounted on the fly wheel or is it seperate and you have to put it on the fly wheel?
|Hi rick the ring gear is separate , the flywheel is made of billet steel,fia approved which is lighter than stock! IT will have to be installed as above mentioned, i am told it does not have to be pinned? Ian|
It is up to you not to pin it. But when I replaced it, the mechanics at BL advised me it was better to pin it. At that time I did not do that and despite I followed the installation procedure and the ring gear was sitting well on flywheel shoulder. Few monts later it has moved 3/16" from its place. It was another funny week-end to remove the gearbox and do what I have described earlier.
By the way as engine is out, it is a good idea to replace the bolt( name pin) at clutch fork with a heavy-duty one as it breaks very often in clutch shaft and could be extremely annoying...

|I thought the TR250(maybe '69 TR6) had a different style starter where the smaller gear was pulled forward toward the motor side and engaged the flywheel from behind? In this case the chamfered ring gear edge would face the gear box.|
But for forward engaging staters I would think the chamfered edge would be on the engine side.
If this is off base please correct me. Cheers!
