Triumph TR6 - Searching For A-Type OD
Hey all, long time lurker.. not quire first time poster. Have a 1969 TR6 and it HAD an A-Type OD, which went out... in the bad, hand-grenade sorta way about a year ago. Since then I've replaced the Gearbox with a conventional TR4A 4-Speed (changed over the top cover so I could enjoy legal back-up lamps). The OD-Tranny is in good shape (other than the OD being destroyed) and the mainshaft is fine with minimal wear. I was wondering if anyone knew where a "reasonably" priced A-Type OD might be found. I've been lurking on eBay, with little success. Thank's in advance |

this is an age old question to all TR-philes...where to get a deal on an O/D. Well the truth to the question unfortunately is no where as they are a valuable addition and those in the know are pricing them at a premium. The old supply and demand formula applies. I can count myself lucky that 4 years ago I bought a tranny with a J-type attached for $500 CDN along with other parts and that was a deal of the century, so far it has given me 7000 miles of trouble free service. My only suggestion is, had you had a J-type then you could have gotten the Laycock O/D from the scapyard from an old Volvo 240 series (1975-1984?) and that would have bolted on to the existing adapter housing. While these O/D are available here in Toronto, the adapter housing is a part that can not be found anywhere. I do believe however the A type did not use an adapter housing like the J-type. Perhaps the Volvo series prior might have used an A-Type ie 140 series but I do not know this. Last I heard is that O/D on their own go for $1200US+ recent prices at Carlisle British Flea Mkt |
