Triumph TR6 - Seat back question on 71

As you guys know, I have a 71 Signal Red TR6 with black vinyl seats, top, etc. I would kind of like the tan color combination, but the seat vinyl and the carpet doesn't really need replacing. Maybe someday.

Anyhow, the backs on my seats and the foam and the webbing and pretty much everything you can't see is in horrible condition. A DPO apparently redid the interior, but not real well. Both seat backs tend to fall off.

I took them off and the fibre board is in pretty bad shape--in places, it won't hold the clips. Home Depot had some press board in a similar thickness, but I can't get it to stay on the driver's seat; I'm guessing it needs to be a little more flexible.

What is the frigging secret to getting those little clips to stay in? And if I decide to replace all the nasty stuff inside the seats, should I bite the bullet and get new vinyl too?

Right now, other than this little issue and the multiple holes in the convertible top, everything is going well. Too well, as a matter of fact, which scares me.

Does anyone have any helpful or even sarcastic advice on this problem? And where can I find the clips.

Hey JL,

I own a TR4 and recently did the entire interior including the seats and I believe the principles are the same.

I too had a hell-uva time fitting the backs with the clips although my new backs were of thin plywood supplied by Moss which I think are better than the hardboard.

What I did....

1) I had noticed that in some cases the metal on the seat back where the clips go into were not straight causing the clips to go in on an angle and not grabbing...check that. If so straighten out the metal with pliers.
2) Make sure clips are wide so as to lock when inserted into holes.
3) I drilled a few extra holes and added a few clips, this helped greatly especially on the top seat frame.

Personally I think the blind clip system stinks, would have rather tap screwed the back panel in.

Hope this helps, Dino

THanks, Dino. Where did you get the clips? I can't find them in the Moss catalog, or TRF.

J.L.

I bought the clips from a local supplier in Toronto who buys them from Moss. I don't know where to look in the TR6 catalogue as I don't have one but it should be the same as in the TR4 catalogue.

In the TR4 catalogue these clips are listed in the carpet/Interior hardware section in the back and they are the same clips as used for door panels, in fact they are listed as "clips/door panel".

Hope this helps

PS buy some extra as you might destroy some in the process, they are $0.50 each

Hey Guys,
My British Leyland Parts Catalogue shows the following: Plate BZA; illustration number BZA35:
Clip, trim, backboard assembly to back rail-RH and LH seat, 12 required; part number: 613769. Fitted up to body number CF1 and CR1.

There's another...illustration number BZA30
Clip, trim, backboard assembly to bottom rail-RH and LH seat, 8 required; part number 608817. USA from 50001 CC to CF1 and CR1.

This same clip is also listed as: (Illustration number BZA30)
CLIP, trim, squab, back rail to gack rail, 16 required. and

(Illustration number BZA30)
CLIP, trim, side, border to support channel-RH and LH seat, 24 required.

These may not be what you're seeking, but it appears to be the clips that hold the backboard assembly to the metal part of the seat back.
