Triumph TR6 - She's dead.....

She's dead! My 71 with an electronic ignition will not start, will not even fire. I have confirmed the following:

Coil is hot, pulled the wire and checked it.
I have a spark, pulled number 1 and checked it.
I have fuel, tried Ether as well.......nothing.
Vacuum is working.
Choke engages, throttle linkage is clear.

The car just turns over and over again. It does not "fire" at all, even with the Ether sprayed in to the chamber.

Carbs were rebuilt within the last two years, the only work done recently was a switch to Grose jets last weekend. I took the car out for a 50 mile drive and it performed beautifully!

Went to start it this weekend and she is dead.

I appreciate the help and input. Thanks, Jeff

Jeff,

Nothing? Even on ether? What is the possibility of a timing issue or maybe spark not hot enough? The fact that even ether doesn't make a difference makes me think timing. Should have at least burped on the ether.

I am with Don, sounds like cam time to me.Sorry

I assume to spray ether through these carbs you have to lift the damper and open the throttle. Is that true? I have never had to use it....knock on wood.

There are some simple checks for timing and probably not a bad idea to get that out of the way. Seems like if something happened to cam timing you would have had some warning something was going on before you shut the engine down. I would still be a little suspicious of the jets you had done recently. Some minor thing could have gone wrong when installing those of shortly after installation. You might want to try the ether again making sure it's through the carbs and into the intake.

Good luck and keep us posted. We can all learn from what you find.

Thank you Don, Don and Henry for your comments.

I let her "rest in peace" overnight, from trying in vain to get it to start the battery had lost much of its charge. Connected it to the charger overnight and it started in the morning.

At this point my thought is the battery may be tired and the starting issue is not related to the carbs but rather I have a weak spark that could not overcome the compression to give me so much as a "burp" as Don put it.

I appreciate the help.....

Check the timing. My 71, without electronic ignition, did the same thing a few weeks back. Everything looked ok. Clive, one of our very knowledgable members, came by and took a look at it. The little flange or whatever on the rotor arm had partially broken off, so everything looked okay, but sometimes it would just spin on the shaft. The immediate problem was that it screwed up the timing. Without even resetting the timing or anything, it ran fine once we got the new rotor arm pointed at the correct cylinder.

She isn't dead,Jeff, she's just resting.
