Triumph TR6 - Shipping a frame

Hello all,
Has anyone shipped a very large item by truck? I am looking to ship a rust free frame cross country. I would assume that it could be strapped to several pallets, I am concerned about it being damaged during transit.
Also, has anyone shipped parts by Greyhound? For oversize items, they are cheaper than UPS and usually you can get the part withing a day or two.
Thanks,
Tom

I think the frame would be too big for Greyhound. Maybe if it's cut into 2 or 3 pieces. I had a fiberglass hardtop shipped by them, and it was much cheaper than truck freight. But it seems that was about as big as they could handle in the luggage bins under the buses.

For me at least, it was necessary to meet the bus and remove the item right away. Not like anyone would steal your frame from the bus station... but you have to take the item home. A truck freight shipment would have a depot near you with a bit more room to keep it until you get there with your trailer or whatever.

If you could find a sharp guy that ships stuff out of your area into where the frame is coming from, a return to you could be gravy for them.

There is big buisness in shipping cars around the country...thanks to ebay and the like. There are many companies that will ship. If the frame you want to ship is a rolling frame then you might be able to strike a deal with these car carriers. I know engines are shipped pretty routinely for around $100.00 from I think UPS..so maybe they would do a frame.

And there are the TR race drivers who travel a lot. If they are going a certain way, it could be an advantage to both him and you. I bought a TR3A frame from a TR owner in Iowa who was going to the races at Limerock, Conn., and after that he was visiting a friend in up-state Vermont. So I went down 125 miles with my trailer from Montreal and picked it up. He asked $100 for his gas and his trouble. I paid $200. for the frame.

Hey Tom,

I think I recall a thread of yours where you were sort of wondering what you got into with your TR. Looks like or on a roll...so to speak. Like you are probably finding out you can find whatever parts you need to rebuild the car as needed. You can't go wrong.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

Thanks guys,
Yes Henry,
I sure got into something with my TR. The frame is fine except for the rear swing arm area. On the driver's side, the areas next to both brackets that hold the swing arm is rusted thru. On the passenger side, this area is fine, however, the attachment to the cruciform and the reinforcement bracket is rusted off. Needless to say, when I jacked the car up, it was making some interesting noises. I have seen some really nice frames that are inexpensive and would be more economical to replace vs my time welding.
