Triumph TR6 - Shipping large car parts... a Q

Anyone have any experience with shipping or receiving large car parts long distance? I'm thinking of driving a restored TR6 from BC to Ontario but the car comes with a factory hard top which I'd rather ship separately and drive topless... smelling the mountain air, etc. I know it'll need crating, etc. I'm checking with transport companies but many deal with full trailer loads only. Anyone out there with some experience with this kind of thing? Thank you! Ken

Ken,
FedEx or UPS will ship whatever you'd want to. Also check the bus companies. I know that Greyhound in the US is often a cheaper alternative. Good luck.

Thx Doug... I tend to think of those guys as small package couriers but I'll check. The "parcel" is 2 feet x 5 feet x 6 feet and weighs 100 lbs. BTW, lots of folks use Greyhound in Canada too. Cheaper than many. Good suggestions.

Congratulation on finally getting your car,
when will you be making this trip.
Cheers

Thx Malcolm. I've been promised "by end of month" which is July 31. It's been almost 2 years as "work in progress" so I'm not quite there yet but soon I'll get a green light and fly out west. Fingers crossed!

When I got my Frame (thanks to Chris Trace for the donation)from Ontario to Nova Scotia. A local trucking company that travels across Canada agreed to "backfill" the frame. So check out your local companies to see what they offer (you may find a fellow enthusiast like I did. Did I mention that my cost was $0.

Oh how sweet that was Les. I'll check locals... maybe some moving companies who would put it on the back as filler. I now know that Fed Ex & UPS are NOT interested due to size and Bison only hauls FTL (Full Trailer Load) in Canada. At 6' 4" I just know I am not going to fit under that hard-top. Maybe when I'm older... we are all shrinking right. Ken

I think the bus option will work for you.

There are plenty of carriers that haul LTL-

Day and Ross is one I know. Don't have number

Fast as Flite 18003876689

Consoldiated Fast Freight 18002681564

Canada Cartage 18002682228

Fluke 18002634843

Good luck

Hey Mike. That's a great list... with #'s included yet! Thank you. I have a quote from MacKinnon which is $504 plus GST but they will only pick up from and deliver to a proper loading dock. If the driver must assist there's a fee added. No residential service. I'll try these suggestions next week. Grandkids & sunroom project taking lots of time right now.

I probably should have pointed out Ken that you will have to get the top to their local warehouse in BC and pick it up from their local warehouse in TO. YOu may need to borrow a friend's truck or van unless you have one.

For the cost of gas and something towards camp park accomodation, I will take my pick up truck and pop up trailer and pick it up in BC and bring it back. I figure gas will be upwards of $2000 for there and back :-)

Good luck and enjoy the drive back.

Hey, I am 5' 10" Im sure i would fit in your 6 with the hardtop on!

I know you said you wanted to drive, but another option is putting the car on the train........... it may cost less than the gas you are going to burn.......
Mitch Smith

Hi Mitch / Mike

I checked out the train (Searail) option and the CN folks seem to have that method aced. That would cost about $1200. However, as Rick C once said... that boxcar ride for the 6 means no memories for me of what could be a neat trip through BC, the Rockies, Prairies and I've always heard that the Northern Ontario run around Lake Superior down to the Soo is something else too so that's become the plan. We fly out to BC August 21. Yahoo!

Mike: Re the hardtop I have the truck (we pull a fifth wheel) so I can handle the pick-up at this end. Just need to make arrangements for receiving. Thx for the reminder.

BTW, here's a link to pictures of the car that I've patiently waited on for 2 years. Yes, it's turn key but I've done 'greasy hands' for many years on American cars so this time around I'm being lazy. If this car survives the cross country trip I hope to meet some of you at BCD 2008. Ken

Ken,
This may not be applicable for you, but as I recall when I had an outer wing shipped from Utah to Alabama, I had it sent to a local garage, a business, as opposed to my home and the cost was SIGNIFICANTLY less. I think the total cost was $35.00 USD. Might investigate what shipping to a local business might save you.

I'm getting that feeling Doug. I just called some of the numbers offered by Mike (above) and all but one would not deal with me (private individuals) even though they offered LTL. Thanks for the tip. Ken

Ken,

Have you considered a small trailer behind your "6" to haul the hardtop home?

Hi Ken

No I didn't Ken. I just couldn't come to grips with a hitch being attached to the car... temporarily or otherwise. I'll have it shipped (I've found one company who will do it if I arrange for loading dock facilities at both ends). It'll be very expensive but I think I should keep the top with the car and bite down hard on the unbudgeted expense. Thx for your thoughts

Ken

The bigger issue is where I store the darn thing once it's here!
Ken Shaddock

Ken,

I store my hardtop on the car in the winter; I rigged a sling and hang it from the ceiling above the car in the summer. You have to be confident of your knots, and watch your head getting in and out of the car unless you have a higher ceiling than mine. I drape streamers of yellow or pink survey flagging from it to remind me to look up as I shuffle along!

Have a great drive!
