Triumph TR6 - Silver Wheel Paint

I'm going to re-spray my stock wheels with silver paint. Does anyone know the proper shade of silver; I was planning on using Eastwood Detail Silver Part No. 1285Z "Correct" Silver for Wire Wheels"...

Thanks,

John Parfitt

John - When I did my TR3A from 1987 to 1990, I used some silver paint that was left over from the re-spray of my wife's 1980 Honda Civic, then clear-coated. They still look perfect after 12 summers and more than 70,000 miles and not one TRA or VTR concours judge ever said they were not the correct shade for TR3A wheels.

John, I used the wheel silver from Moss (220-560) on the wheels as well as the hub caps. Its more the correct grey than silver. You'll need two, it sprays poorly near the bottom of the can. I used a good heat primer overall and clearcoat only the inside. VSCCC on the 12th. SC

Hi John,
If you are near a Canadain Tire I found that their GM spray paint 47-3590-6 to be a great shade of silver.

Hey give Fred a call at British Autosport in Malton, he has the code and I had my wheels done and they are perfect. How do I know that they are perfect? could not tell the difference between the painted ones and the spare.

I believe that there is a Ford colour that is very close. The silver that our TR's have, has a slight blue hue in it.
Steven

Hello again,
As a follow up to my last post...when I had my rims powder coated (all 5 for $125) I was told there was only one silver shade available and then I found the GM paint that matched it perfecly.
I would recommend the powder coating they sandblast the rims and the finish is coats the complete rim both sides. I tried painting them at home primer,brush,spray...and was never happy with the finish..powder coating was well worth it.

Are you saying u had all 5 blasted then both sides powder for $125. If so where? I have a set of 4 rims I want done so I can mount daily drives on ( preserve the red lines for shows).
Rick C
P.S. how is the wind blocker project coming along?
Rick Crawford

Hi Rick,
I had the rims done well over a year ago in a tire/rim shop near St Jacobs (north of Waterloo) can't think of the name of the shop at the moment.( I'll search for it if you'd like) I was expecting a mirror like finish on the rims but was told on some grades of steel this is not possible as the blasting is hard on the steel .They have a slight orange peel look but only with your face right up to them..On the car they look great and the finish still looks like day one.The blocker is in the cardboard shape testing stage...I'm working on making one that will stay in place with the top up or down.

Charlie:
That's a great price! I was looking into options here, and the shop that did quite a few other items for me quoted 75 to 85 US dollars per wheel. That included the sandblasting, but still pretty high. I opted for alloys, will store the stock wheels in the shed with the a/c parts that aren't going back on the car. I might contact you later to see if you wanna start subletting powdercoating for us Yanks.....even with the freight, it might be cheaper! ;)

I used Wurth silver wheel paint. The color is a great match, but it may be glossier than the original. It is a quality paint w/ a high solid content and is easy to spray, but it is pricey. It is also very durable.
Wayne

Hi Rod

If your tires are off no removal time. Wheels are usually surface rust and paint. Manual Blasting under 3 minutes a wheel if the guy turns down the pressure and reloads proper abrasive or the orange peel effect happens from the blast abrading. Max 15 min.

Setup wheels/charge/coat. 10 min. bake 1 hour aprox. Some outfits are realy automated some not. So price will differ but not by much.

Now if you want anything but base colors ie. 1 silver. They now have them but want lots more.

Charlie got a good price but in your case unless there charging for perfect match of color no peel extensive surface prep Rod. I think you might want to stop driving your Mercedes SUV in there when getting quotes.:)

RickC bring wheels tires off /wobbly pop/ coveralls/ $10 bucks for the 2 bags grit 1/2 bag for your job rest is mine. I will supply pressure blaster / air/ sandlot/ hood/ advice mostly bad gives lots of laughs. Plus just to make you feel good while getting dirty. I'll invite Charlie over to help drink the wobbly and keep up a steady stream of comments on your progress while you work.:)

Seriously though the powder outfit here closed down after losing a contract but have reopened I will check current prices.

I accept your invite but I only have one problem...How come I gotta do all the work while u 2 sit with the wobbly pop and take shots at my progress?? Sounds like an enjoyable Sat or Sun afternoon. Charlie, if you decide to come over to partake in the abuse session bring along your latest invention.
Ha Don, I did not notice you offering any wobbly pop:)
Besides It would be difficult to fit the 4 rims into my carry-on. Thanks for the offer, but I will stick to just comming out to see you and Ignatius...hopefully you have your project on the road by then.
FYI, I had my first 5 rims done at a local mining equipment mfgr. Ya goota love those government jobs! I do not want to push my luck there now as everyones' job security is on thin ice:(
Rick C
PS correct me if I am wrong but was not the original colour more a greyish?
Rick Crawford

Hi Rick,
I"d love to sip on a pop and along with Bill watch you work !! hahahaha
The silver finish I have is very very close to my original colour..it has a real grey tint to it even though it's called silver

Hey boys,
If you're organizing a southern Ontario TR BS and
wobbly pop session count me in! I'll even host it
in my toasty wood fired garage in beautiful downtown
Beeton. Going stir crazy myself with all this snow.
Hows about it?
Christopher Trace

Hi Chris looking at March.

I'm oil fired and warm but Rick may need a couple of bottles of real high test to get him out back sand blasting wheels. Really like to see you will let you know. Ricks buying.:)

If your travels take you to the Guelph area mail me anytime.

Hey Chris

I just checked out Beetons location. This may not be a bad idea for a mid winter visit. Any thoughts guys.

Christopher,

I'm planning to drive my TR from Calgary to London Ontario in the summer - not sure if you are anywhere near my route...

JP
John Parfitt

And I thought Americans did not know anything about what lies north of the 45th! Just kiddin John (and just kiddin to you al south of 45).Actually u are pretty close considering the distance you will already have travelled. You are only about 1 hour further E on the 401 to "Bills' Garage & watering hole". If u decide to do the extra hour on a weekend to go see Bill, let us know so you will have a few more TRs to visit with.

Ha Bill, GEESSS it looks like Chris does not have a problem with me doing the sand blasting IN his warm and toasty garage next to his red TRV8! Yup, March it is.
Ya I am into a visit to Beeton....Chris is buying:)
Rick C
Rick Crawford

I couldn't find Beeton on the map....(just kidding - I couldn't find the map). My planned road trip to London involves a TR6 with overdrive sitting in my father in law's barn covered in bird feathers. Some lawyer has been paying for storage and hasn't been there in over two years. I'm planning on swapping transmissions and driving out of there with his overdrive. I'll leave the lawyer with my 4 speed. I doubt if he'll notice.

John
He might notice if you do not put it back in for him hehe.
Sounds like a dasterdly deed!
Why not see if he wants to sell it? ( less the OD ofcourse).
Sounds more like we should meet u in London so you can get out of Dodge quicker!
Rick C

Hey Chris

You pick the date best for you. Feb. Or march. Anytime.

Rick is talking about coming down my place to sandblast his wheels we were off BBS discussing that.

OK so you caught me. If I had said the 49th which is the 1270 mile long parallel line dividing use guys from us guys out west then this would have been more accurate. But then there is a lot of Canada towards the east that lies S of the 49th. (Do I dare tell you that Clarksburg is at 44*32'60"N Latitude:)
