Triumph TR6 - Small halogen bulbs (tail lamps/ instruments)

The distance between the back of the car and the back of my seat has concerned me on more than one occasion, so I would like to give those short-sighted dreamers with the slow reaction times as much notice of my presence as possible!

The reflectors on the tail-lamp assemblies could be better, but it's tricky to do. A solution may be to use halogen stop/tail lamps (LBC Car Co (again!)) to increase the light output.

Any experiences or comments regarding these? - meltdowns, lamp life, real effect etc? - also, bulbs for the instruments are available.

If illumination is the issue, I would go with an LED setup over the Halogen. Cheaper to construct, brighter, last longer, and will draw less amps than you do now.

Roger,
I have read comments on the MGB BBS (in a previous life!) addressing halogen bulbs. you might want to check this: http://www.webbikeworld.com/Motorcycle-technical-articles/halogen/index.htm

I had seen an ad recently for LED conversion replacement bulbs, will post it if I find it again.

For those into minutiae, LED's light faster, too! But would a milli-second or two matter? The average person cannot distinguish intervals less than 100 milliseconds (1/10th of a second).

Another consideration is to add another red light to the back. I have done this for exactly the reason you talk about ( I also drive with the lights on during the day). It is a small rectangular light with a screw as its' mount. Not wanting to drill any holes in rear valance or bumper, I got a chrome bracket that clamps onto the bumper and the light is attached to it. I got power from the bumper mounted plate illumination (1971). It has an ordinary bulb in it but you have me thinking now.

I got some halogen bulbs for my tail lights in my '74. JCWhitney.com was my source. They work pretty well but those tailgating monster trucks still make me nervous!

Thanks guys - I remember reading a while ago that heat may be a problem with the halogens but wasn't aware of the LEDs.

Rod - that's a handy link - I clicked around a bit on that site and found this http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-bin/store/commerce.cgi?product=CAR which seems ideal if they are bright enough. I may risk a few bucks and get a couple to try.

Rick - The extra light would make me feel better but I think part of the problem is that the TR's lights are so low. A couple of years ago I saw a nicely done LED strip set into the top rail of a roll bar which is what I would ideally like but that's a way off for me at the moment.
