Triumph TR6 - So I painted the engine bay...

So I painted the engine bay sapphire blue, Which I thought was stock. The only other color blue I can find for 74 was french blue. Well it turns out the sapphire blue doesnt match the body color! its lighter and doesnt have the metalic flake in it. ARG! so yeah Kinda stinks because theres noway Im re-stripping the whole engine again. This project has been going on for 4 months now and I Just wanna drive!

Pretty hot and sweaty in your area lately.
Tough job to do when it's like that.
Come out here where it is cool and damp and do my wedge

Here are a few links that might help ... albeit a bit late perhaps.

SBF- Did you say the body paint was metallic? Any chance the body was repainted a non stock color before you bought the car? I may be wrong, but I have never seeen an original TR6 paint job that had any metallic flake to it. They may exist... I've never seen one...
I recently broke the golden rule when I had my car painted as well. I ran with the original Carmine red but did a base coat clear coat which would cost me a bunch of show point but I like the shine and protection of the clear coat... The cars originally came with an enamel single stage paint from the factory...

SBF
Gotta agree with DWS.
TRs never came with metal flake paint jobs or clear coat for that matter. Like DWS said.

As a side note, the above mentioned link shows paint code 96 available from '72 to '74. Not true. My MAY '71 is 96 as original.

Does your 6 have the comission number plate? If so, what is the colour code?

DWS:
You musta moved the TR on the dollies before taking the pic cause the diff oil stain is in the foreground :0)
Nice garage floor and very nice red paint.

Bob - I kind of wish it was oil. It's actually a spot where my epoxy floor is peeling... I have a couple of 8x8 sections of the floor I need to do over. The fumes just about killed me the 1st go around so I have been putting it off for a while...
DWS Smith

DWS, yes the original painty has a flake in it. Looking at other TR6 pics, it seems to be a widely used color. It might not be stock, but if its a re-paint then whoever did it, did a real nice job. Oh well, the new color is growing on me
SBF Fitzgerald

SBF, that is what's important. I have deviated from OE in a couple of areas (one being the clear coat instead of single stage enamel) but I really don't plan on entering my car into any competitive shows anyway. My goal is to proudly drive it...
DWS Smith

SBF and DWS, I just got the paint code for the Indigo Blue Jaguar dark blue paint with a metal flake. I'm thinking very seriously of using that color on my 71, TR6, but wonder if I'm doing the wrong thing by not staying true to the data plate which is 96, Sapphire Blue. Comments?

DWS:
Wouldn't you just know that somebody'd pick up on the "flaw" in your floor :0) Sorry about that!
BTW, DWS and SBF - you guys got first names so we can cease with the initials?
Cheers,
Bob

In 71 the paint color was called Imperial Blue but carried the code of 96 and was renamed Saphire Blue in 72. All Triumphs used crayola colors with no metal flake except for some late TR7/8 and possibly the early 1800/2000 roadsters and saloons. Saphire Blue is a magnificent color on a TR6
Brett Evans

Bob - Yes my first name is Darin.
I tried to go back into my profile and change my ID but it wouldn't let me. I'm not crazy about the DWS thing... May have been user error...
DWS Smith

Doug - I am with Brett on the Saphire Blue. It's a really nice color. If you like the OE color I feel it's best to run with it for a number of reasons. On another note, if I was for example going to change colors I would run with a color that was offered on a TR6 the year the car was produced. Remember, this is just my logic... I have a friend who has a 1970 that he painted custom pearl white that is a real head turner that draws crouds where ever it goes. He insists it's the paint but I think the side pipes and rumble from the aluminum 215 Buick V8...
DWS Smith

Darin,
56, Dark Blue has been my intended choice and it was available in 71, but that Jaguar blue really looks good on the XJ. The next quandry is when I redo the data plate and yes, I'll do that with a new one imprinted with all the same stuff...except...do I put 96 back on the data plate or change the number to 56 if I use that paint, to reflect what's actually on the car or remain true to it's birth certificate even though the paint will be different?

Paint code 56 is called Royal Blue and was only available until 1970. In 71 it was replaced by code 96 Sapphire Blue. Curiously the brochures I have from 1971 call it Imperial Blue, but the parts manuals all list Sapphire as the color.
Brett Evans

Doug - That's a tuffy... If I for example changed to another TR6 color I would update the stamp. If I was going to a Jag color I'm not sure I would bother...
