Triumph TR6 - Speedometer Problem

Can anybody help this TR6 driver from another forum with his speedo problem? I've already told him there are no electrical issues with a TR6 sppedo. I'm wondering if it is possible to test the speedo mechanism with an electric drill rigged up with a cable end? Here is his post:
I checked the speedometer cable connex to the gearbox, re-greased the whole cable, ran it without the speedometer on it. Cable's fine. Does the tip of the cable seat deeply enough in the speedometer to work, or can that tip end slip?
I see no electrical trouble-shooting tips on this online. Might the voltage stabilizer have fritzed, being hooked up without a ground? And would that knock it out like this? The way it is attached to the back, does it make any contact with the speedometer itself?
I am new to the car and frankly, between this and a few other niggling problems which aren't covered in the "so you've just bought your fourth vintage British sports car" manuals (They leave out more than they should for we rookies. Really.) have me at a loss.
I have checked the wiring, re-connected the speedometer half a dozen times and still, no go. And this also:
I had assumed this to be a mechanical-not-electrical issue, but I took the instrument off and ran the car down the street just to see if the cable was spinning, and it was. It seems very secure to the back of the speedometer when I attach it, though I suppose that could be a problem.
I'm sure he'd appreciate the help.

Bob- Is this a new cable?

The cable shouldn't be greased. It puts too much strain on the cable.

I used a drill to test my speedo. I suggest he try it.

If he doesn't have the right cable, it may not be long enough to engage the speedo properly.

If the cable has lost its squared ends and is more rounded it may be slipping.

Some ideas to try.

Have him look at this write up.

Thanks guys. I passed on the info to the guy on "The Triumph Experience" forum. It is an old cable Don and I think he's a newbie. Guy's on the wrong forum anyway if he's got a TR6 and needs help. This is the place to be!
Cheers,

Did you invite him over Bob?
Rick Crawford

Sure did Rick. I never pass up a chance to promote this forum.
