Triumph TR6 - SPEEDOMETER REMOVAL

I need to remove my speedometer to access the flasher switch. I disconnected the cables in behind and loosened the connectors. The gauge seems stuck to the dash and will not dis-locate. Is there a sealant or glue of some sort as it seems that I may seperate the wood dash?

There are 2 nuts on the back of the speedo that hold some brackets behind. Once removed, just psuh the speedo out.

Seeing things in a pic is like someone trying to explain it in a 1000 words...:)
Both big gauges are held inplace by 2 long spade affairs with thumb nuts as the fastener on long threaded rods attached to the back of the gauges.
One is located at 2 O'clock and the other at 7 O'clock as looking at the face of the gauge. Remove the thumb nuts, slide off the long spade, then push the gauge out of the dash. I would try to leave the electrical connections attached then remove when the gauge is in hand. You will have to remove the speedo cable and trip reset (from dash bracket hole)first.

On re-install you will find that there is a strong possibility you will disconnect a connector or dislodge one of the light bulb sockets from the gauge hole while trying to get your hand back up in there to put the spades and thumb nuts back on. Be carefull with the correct bulb holder locations back into the gauge.
Oh Ya make sure the gauge is not rotated slightly.

Thanks guys, I have removed everything as stated. However, it does not want to release. It almost seems as if something else is holding it in place. This car was from the extreme heat in Texas and some rubber seems almost to have welded to other fixtures. This perhaps is the same with the gauges.

There is a rubber O ring involved in this where gauge meets wood. It is just being stubborn for you. It is a thin o-ring so you should be able to just pop the gauge out unless someone has glued it in which is unlikely.
Just a wee bit more force should do it.The 2 thumb nuts and spades are the only thing holding it in place. The end of the spades actually contact the metal inner dash.

I finally got the speedo out. As suspected the O-ring acted almost like a glue creating a stubborn scenario. In fact, I cracked the glass of the gauge during removal. I seperated the glass and hopefully can replace easily.

standard window glass will do. Usually cost more to cut a circle though.

For the price of glass pick 1 up on ebay.
DON KELLY

John,

Not sure where you are located in Canada but I have a spare speedometer glass if you want it. I replaced my speedometer last year with one from eBay because my odometer didn't work.

Also removed close to 70K miles from my 6 in the process.

I am in Parry Sound, 1 1/2 hours away. I will be driving to Toronto this week. Email me at jbrunatti@cogeco.ca The glass is all I need as the bezel is different on mine.

Thanks, John
