Triumph TR6 - Spring '04 Motoring Music

I'm 12 pushrods shy of getting on the road again and have started thinking about what'll be in my CD player when I do. It'll be "The Thorns" and "Jayhawks". What about the rest of you?

In 1963, I put a radio in my TR3A, couldnt hear it, took it out again and ever since, I enjoy the roar of my 4-banker zinging along in overdrive at 75 mph. Now that's music to my ears !!

Don Elliott, 1958 TR3A
Don Elliott

How about Canned Heat, Cream, CSNandY, Doobies, Fleetwood Mac, Stones, Doors, L. Skynyrd, Savoy Brown, etal. And for more mello days Enya, Clannad, Moody Blues, D. Krall, N. Jones, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan .... The list goes on.
I'm proud to be part of the generation that has held to the firm belief that, for the most part, todays music is uninspired, redone, over-hyped crap.
Steve (still rockin after all these years)
Steve C. (member)

Geez Steve, how do you carry all that music around? Yup, CSNY's "Suite Judy Blue Eyes" is ripe with great memories. To carry your list further: JJCale, Renaissance, Traffic, Hendrix ('All Along the Watchtower'), Guess Who ('These Eyes' thank you Canada!), Bob Marley, Allman Brothers, T Rex, Rory Gallagher ('Bullfrog Blues'), The Who . . . .

And yes Don, the purest music of all lies beneath the bonnet.

Rick Orthen

Notice that it's us "O.F."s who have the best music - both in the stereo players and under the hood!

Bob (just Rockin' a whole lot slower)
R.C. Blair

Many excellent choices above. I would have to add the Grateful Dead, B-52s, Guadalcanal Dairy, Brian Auger and the Oblivion Express, Johnny Winter, Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets, Talking Heads, Dead Kennedys, Dire Straights, Darryl Rhodes. Another one that I realize is not everyone's cup of tea is Frank Zappa, you just have to love a song that includes the lyrics:

"Fuzzy Dice
Bongos in the back
My ship of love is
Ready to attack"
From Dog Breath off the Frank Zappa album Uncle Meat.

Then for all of the Country Cowfreaks out there (it's that growing up in Texas influence), there are the Leon Russell "Hank Wilson" albums, Willie Nelson, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Kinky Friedman and the Texas Jewboys, Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, Jerry Jeff Walker, etc.
SteveP

Thanks Steve. I find I'm not alone in liking FZ in my LBC. LZ & Tull, too!
EC Smith

YAY Steve - Overnite Sensation still has to be one of my favourites!!
Roger H

That's a pretty good play list that's already been mentioned especially the fine tuned well orchestrated
symphony that's under the hood. There are two other bands
worth mentioning. The Beatles and Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Mid 70s summer top down 1am TR250 with a package shelf full of speakers. Passenger seat full of Pizza bags helping to pay for toys..:) Radio station plays 4 hours continuous repeat first heard release of ?

Meatloafs "BAT OUT OF HELL"

Nobody got a cold pizza that night. Just flying. Probably woke up most of thier neighbors as well. I think its still the best late night driving album to date. Just fits the pipes.

Zappa in New York was the most ripped to tape and CD by my kids as they grew up. Seconded by DR. Hook? Brilliant man and a great loss.

Quiet times, I like Willy but since I rarely am quiet. My current favourites in the truck and shop would be Steve Earl, "Copperhead road" "Guitar Town" Dire Straights and most of above.

Newer stuff my children bought me "Kid Rock" album "Cocky" something about one song just fits me they think? My wife agreed but she only lets me play it in the truck or shop...:)

I completely agree with SteveC. Not much new quality. But your play lists sure are good!

Bill

When by myself the sound of the wind and the engine
is all I need. When my wife Andrea comes along then the CDs come out.The only thing I could add to the fine play list above is SPRINGSTEEN,SPRINGSTEEN,SPRINGSTEEN, early John Cougar
Melancamp and very early Elton John, Tumbleweed Conection,Madman Across the Water, the live version of Funeral for a Friend. That last song has propelled me
through many along night.
Christopher Trace

All I can say is I'm sure glad I don't have to be closed in up in a car with you guys on a long trip with the musical choices you've made.

My choices? Mozart, Beethoven, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Dvorak, Verdi, Puccini, Paganini, Lalo......
Dan Masters

But Dan, we're talking opened up car. We keep a wide ranging selection of stuff, just about anything except opera, rap/hiphop and disco. For those long closed up car trips we have been known to break out stuff like Copeland, Gershwin, Holst, Mendelssohn, Stravinsky, Wagner (Stuart Myers: "That would be Vagner." TJ: "Yea, but it says Wagner right here." exchange heard on WR{adio}F{ree}G{eorgia} many years ago), stuff you mentioned, etc. in addition to the other types.

Then again, it just could work. Top down, pull out a copy of Der Ring des Nibelungen and crank it up with Walkurenritt. I can hear it now "I love the smell of Triumphs in the morning, it smells like happiness."
SteveP

Dan--That's OK! I too would enjoy what Steve alluded to with the smell thing--Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries" (chased with Mott the Hooples "All the Young Dudes").

Interesting a 9 inch Ford and Mozart.

Little tip here. If you go drag racing your conversion you might want to keep that playlist off in the pit.

Pretty much guarantee playing it will get you one run only against the baddest wheel standing Hemi they can find...:)
Bill Brayford

Anyone who has never began a Sunday morning drive with Rush's "Red Barchetta" has yet to truly live. OK, so the title mentions a Ferrari, but the song was based on a short story about a young man in an increasingly totalitarian state who sneaks off for forbidden blasts through the countryside in an LBC. Sample lyric: "Well weathered leather.. hot metal and oil... the scent of country air...sunlight on chrome, the blur of the landscape... every nerve aware!" That song is 23 years old, but is still pure magic.

Other than that (and Click and Clack's "Car Talk" when running errands with my daughter), my favorite music is by the Sacred British Valvetrain Ensemble.

65 Degrees here this Saturday!

Cheers!
Terrence Brex

Alright fellas, I'm 24 and here's the list for both of my LBCs (I RESPECT classic rock and classic cars!)

The Who, Traffic, Stones, Tull, CSN&Y, Yardbirds, Beatles, Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane, Moody Blues, Zeppelin, Hendrix......the list goes on and on!!

Modern music simply sucks!! Amazing how many people my age think classic rock sucks but then again there are those of us who know that classic is king..and we're plentiful, you just have to look to find us! Anytime you see someone college-aged in an old car, you can surely bet they know what music is best! By the way, I forgot to mention New Riders of the Purple Sage, how long's it been since you heard that name???

Rgds,
Aaron

Dan - the dynamic range of classical limits it to the system in my Astro. Too much disappears in the TR6. Unless you have a 250W system...

I'll just rock to the radio - Van Halen works well, but the all time favorite has to be Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell". Have to be careful not to pass cops if that's playing...

Brent B

Terrance Brex,
Red Barchetta is not about a Red Ferrari, rather a rare,....very rare Italian machine called a Barhetta. Named after its shape "barchetta" meaning little boat (hull shape)
Yes I agree it is one if not the best song to listen to in your TR. Along with early Floyd, Jethro Tull, Zepplin, The Who.....could go on 4 ever.
Marcello

Led Zep and Yes, if I had a stereo.
All I have is an ancient Radiomobile mono radio which at least gets FM
Ron
R. Algie

Joss Stone is pretty cool. Got the Doobies "Rockin' Down the Highway" goin' thru my head, tho.
Tom

Aaron--A 24-YO who knows New Riders? Awesome. "Panama Red, Panama Red . . . ."

Anybody remember the name of the album the late Peter Ustinov did on sports cars?
I know it's not rock or blues, he had a picture of himself peaking out from under the bonnet of a XK-120. I'm sure it's in the basement with a pile of 33 1/3's! But warm weather is here & a Pertronics is awaiting my attention.
ED Edward Dorsch

I believe that the Ustinov bit was called "Grand Prix of Gibraltar", if what a friend tells me is correct. He is working on finding a copy (or link) for me.

Not to be a disagreeable jerk or anything, but as far as the Barchetta thing, Neil Peart mentions in the book "Visions" and again in "The Ghost Rider" that "Barchetta" was used in the song because of a certain Ferrari Barchetta that used to be in a museum in California (but sadly, has since been sold to a private collector). Neil felt that it was one of the most beautiful things ever created by man.

I've met Geddy and Alex on a few social occasions (GREAT guys, although Ged is almost painfully shy.. which is NEVER an issue with Alex - he's hilarious), and may have the chance to meet Neil later this year (due to a "loosely" business, friend of a friend connection). If he seems open to conversation, and I think of it, I'll ask him about it [i.e. if he has considered buyig one for himself], and of course, his thoughts on LBCs.
T. M. Brex

Hi, I to have met (many many times) as you can see I live a few doors from Neil (honestly) as I am also Italian (born) so I feel I am better qualified to talk about a song about a Italian car written by a Canadian drummer who lives down the block from me.
Cheers
Marcello

I have no desire for a flame war. I can only say that I will personally believe the written word of the man himself.

TB

p.s. Neil has lived in Los Angeles with his new wife since he got married in September 2000.

The good news is that my car came with a radio when I got it. The bad news is that is was missing the detacheable faceplate!. I will rectify this soon. When I do it will be:

Linkin Park, System of a Down, Disturbed, Rob Zombie. I'll listen to anything but classical or country. Right now I'm just listening to these CD's while changing out the transmission.
D J Guess

My favourite tunes CD is one I made up of all songs that mention or have something to do with cars…..eg Drive My Car - The Beatles..Radar Love – Golden Earring,..Boys In The White Bright Sports Car—Trooper..409 – Beach Boys ,Drag City..Mustang Sally,..Litte GTO…Hot Rod Lincoln ect..
Charlie
Charlie Ballard

I've somewhat gone into the country cowfreak mode having just returned from Fort Worth, my old home. Picked up some Austin Lounge Lizards, Reverend Horton Heat, Flatlanders, Ray Wylie Hubbard (have to laugh about a song titled "Screw You, We're from Texas") and a live album of two Texas legends Billy Joe Shaver and Kinky Friedman recorded in Sydney OZ.

That last one features an updated version of The Texas Jewboys (Friedman's old band) parody of Merle Haggard's "Okie from Muscogee," the infamous "A$$hole from El Paso." Plus there was the usual assortment of politically incorrect stuff that Kinky is known for. Shame though that the folks in OZ missed out on "The Ballad of Charles Whitman," a catchy tune if ever there was one.
SteveP

What about Trampled Underfoot by Led Zep for all you petrol heads!
Ron
R. Algie

Charlie,
I would suggest 'Jesus Built My Hotrod' by Ministry.
