Triumph TR6 - steering rack mountingd

Hi folks

Well its +9C in Nova Scotia, and I am sending this thread from the garage.

I hope to install the steering rack this weekend, I am replacing the stock mounts with Alloy mounts, the question I have is do I have to use the original locating plate or can they be disposed of?

Please reply to lobleyhill@hotmail.com (garage email)

Thanks

Who's mounts

Man it is quiet around here...tried to harass Alistair but he just said I would say mine is bigger and better. Oh well, he got some measurement of other guys schticks so he can now compare his length.
Seems if I say something silly on a post others will wake up and answer you.
Sorry, I do not recall if I used the OE plate or not. Plates did not come with my aluminium blocks. If I was to guess, I would say I did not use them.

Rick...kinda like a new kitten or puppy...you can look underneath and tell what kind it is:-)

Well thanks to Doug & Rick

Anyway please see picture of the fitted mounts (bought off ebay in the US), Alistair is of the opinion that they should be fitted with the original plates. The ones I bought did not have plates, I shall see if I can find the box.

I shall be updating my webpage soon with new pics.

Les, Who did you get those from?

I got through a seller "Bluechips" who sells at lot of LBC parts on ebay, he said that he manufactures these, he can be contacted at sulkevich@ameritech.net Don is there a problem with these parts?

I won't pretend to be a technical authority, and I am happy to be told I am wrong, but those mounts look to be in the wrong place to me. As I understand it, the rack mounts should butt up against the vertical "wall" on the rack to stop any movement side-to-side. The first picture shows what looks to me like the nylon plug which my mount instructions warned against losing when removing the old mounts, as that the mount should cover it. There was a service tool intended to push the original mounts out to the vertical stops, though this wasn't really needed with the solid mounts I got from Goodparts since they are wider than the Bluechips mounts (I have bought from him and think he has good stuff - not trying to criticise his parts). I am pretty sure that the mounts you have are the same as those supplied by Moss etc. so I am sure that they are suitable, just don't look to be in the right place to my eye.

The plate which usually sits under the mounts has angled slots for the U-bolts, so maybe that helps to locate the mount? Looking at the pcture it doesn;t seem like you could really move the mount sideways if you wanted to be able to get a socket onto the nut.

I think that gist of all that is that I would suggest you check the horizontal location of your mounts!

Cheers

Now you have me worried, so I have attached a picture that I took from another TR6 (you can zoom on this). If anyone else can provide a picture of solid mounts then it would be appreciated.

thanks

Not an ideal shot - the mounts aren't fastened up at the moment as I moved the rack forwards to ease engine removal, but you can see that these mounts are much wider and cover the rack right up to the vertical part. Maybe the other design isn't supposed to butt up against the wall - it seems to me that the potential for rack side-to-side movement is much greater with the setup you have. Whether this is a real issue is another matter, of course!

Oh, and don't worry, Rick. I will be cleaning and painting everything before I put it all back together!

Les, I used the same GoodPart mounts as Alistair, and yes the mounts should but up against the shoulder of the rack like Alistair said, and yes I did use the stock bottom plates.

Rob

Well it appears I have even a different version.

First off, yes use the bottom plate.

I hate to say this Les but I agree with the others. The bracket should be up against the lip so as to stop lateral movement.
If you look at my version, it is 2 pieces. The round top piece does not go over to the lip but the bottom piece does.
Alistair, interesting your setup says to keep the little plastic plug. Mine said nothing about it and as you can see mine is gone.
Mine was bought through a MOSS distributor.

Rick,Alstair,Rob,Les,

I just installed Good's rack mounts and could not get the drivers side to but up tightly to the stop (even with banging on it). The passenger side did, however, but up nicely. I spoke with Richard Good to see if this was ok. He advised once the mount is bolted down the rack would not likely move but emphasized the importance of the rack being straight. I do not expect to test drive for another couple of weeks. Shawn.

Took another look at your posted image and either that 6 cylinder has a major "list" or there are a few more cans in that engine:)
The brackets appear to be OE and butt up against the flanges.

Shawn, just a thought but maybe there is a weld beed at the base of the flange and a little chamfer on the bracket might cure the problem. Or elongate the holes on the under bracket so everything "top side" can get closer to the flange.

Thius frame used to belong to Chris Trace and had a V8 fitted and so some frame mods were left on.

Regards to the mounts I am in concersation with the ebay seller and I am confident that a settlement will be reached soon. The problem is that the bottom part of the braket is not wide enough.

Les
lw gilholme

Les
Agreed....have you shown him our pics to prove his are not wide enough?

Ya, now I remember you got his frame. It must have been straightened then.
FYI (not sure if you know or not)Chris sold his rebuilt 6 and now owns an older bimmer. Just talked to him late last week and expects the motor back any day now. Also is looking at a Triumph TR6 motorcycle as another project.

Les- Send them back and get Richards either from him or TRF. You will be happier.

Les- TRF also sells his but if they are out then you have to wait until he gears up and makes more.

I spoke to Richard yesterday and they should be on the way on Monday, so today I took off the other ones and have them packed ready to go back from whence they came from, also expecting my sway bar links soon. On another note my rotors are in the shop and they should be ready next week so it looks like Easter weekend could be busy (temps are due to be about +4c.

Many thanks too all on this issue. By the way my web page should be updated in the next two weeks so please bookmark www.user.eastlink.ca/~lesgilholme

Thanks

Les,
Visited your site. Man you had some real rust to overcome. Makes me appreciate just how good a condition my -6 was in, but I still have a bunch of holes here and there that I'm trying to repair. It looks like your DPO ruined a nice blue in favor of white. To what color did you restore?

Doug- That thing not on the road yet?
DON KELLY

Don, you ask embarassing questions my friend. Sure it's on the road...as long as I pull it with my Jeep!! Had I only known!@!@!

Doug Baker

Mr Kelly,

There is a saying....it has something to do with livin' in a glass house and stones....

(you know you walked into that one my friend:)

Hay Doug, I remember back a few years and you coming onto this BBS. You have come a long way since then and I know you are still having fun. Just think about the day when you will be cruising down the road ,top down, and getting that thumbs up or "nice car" from someone looking at you. That time will come and that will occur. I guarantee it!

by the way, know how you feel. As you can see, all I
needed was a seat and a steering wheel.

Knew that was coming
