Triumph TR6 - Sudden uncontrolled accelleration

Hey Guys,
Just got little red back from the shop and boy did i get skinned! put on alternator and changed out all hoses, added pertronix electronic ign, and new coil...960 bucks....
Driving home for 20 miles all was well. Stopped for gas and after taking off, the accellerator just kept on taching up with my foot off the gas. Got into 2nd and she still would not slow down and would redline tach between gears! I put her in neutral, and turned turned off the engine..coasted to a stop. tried it again, same result. third time, when it tried to take off by it self, i quickly pumped the gas pedal, and she quit accellerating and acted normally for teh rest of the drive back to the house....Really scared my 10 year old in the car. do not want to experence that again. any ideas?
regards,
Terry

It sounds like a stuck throttle linkage and you un-stuck it when you pumped the pedal. With the engine off you should be able to give it some pedal and see if it sticks somewhere from pedal up to carb butterfly's....If you haven't checked already.

In order for it to tach up like you say it has to get air as well as fuel and the only way to get air is through the butterfly's in the carbs and they are actuated by the linkage.

Someone may have some better ideas but that's all I can think of.

I had a similar problem, also right after a visit to a "Professional" shop. There was a small burr on the end of one of the idle-adjustment screw that stuck on the flange it hits, and wouldn't release back to normal. I gave it a light filing and a little grease. No problems since.

Check the linkage below and behind the rear carb, maybe the spring/washer combo has jumped out of the slot. Also check both the bushings at the firewall..as Henry said it sounds like a stuck linkage somewhere

I vote for the throttle linkage, having had an experience of a bolt fail on the folded coupling assembly that connects the thottle shafts. This allowed one carb throttle to stay propped open when the accelerator was released. It happened on the freeway and made for an interesting exit. Since then, I always carry extra bolts in tool box, so it will never happen again.

i will be shecking the linkage top to bottom.

If it still happens, pull it back with your toe. But fix it asap.

Terry, have to agree with every one else, except that because we have a mechanical likage to the carb. it is possible to reverse acelleraion by putting your foot
underneath the gas pedal and pull back up. A couple of years back a guy I had bought alot of parts off of had given me as a gift a new set of Triumph rubber matts for my ride. I put them in at the show and drove away.
Two min. out of town my gas pedal got stuck in the down position, the pedal was caught on the new matt.
The tach went up to 6000 before I wedged my foot under the gas pedal and pulled it back up. I have since modified the matt so that never happens again but it is good to remember that with mechcanical linkage that you always have control.
