Triumph TR6 - Sunny South, January Edition

At the risk of derision from Northerners and the guys in Canuckistan, we are pretty much shut down. We're sitting on about six inches of snow that was then coated with freezing rain turning the streets into extended skating rinks.

Doug, how are things over in Huntsville?

SteveP1

Last week they were saying we were gonna be pounded by about a foot. Now it looks like a couple of inches followed by days of heavy rain.
Better yous guys than us

Nice pic Steve . Didn't recognize you with the glasses on.
DON KELLY

I am sooooooooo sorry to hear that the south is getting snow.

Must be absolute chaos. No snow removal equipment or supplies. But at least it won't last too long.

Michael Petryschuk

Yes Don, between the glasses, different hair color and the sex change operation I probably am difficult to recognize in the picture....

As for snow removal equipment and supplies, it's not so much that there isn't any as much as events like this are rare enough that it is not worth it to have dedicated snow plows for an event like this and then have them just sit the vast majority of the time because they are not needed. As a result, in this area they use dump trucks with plows attached and spreadsers for sand/salt mixes. Between the state, the local counties and cities, there are probably somewhere in the neigborhood of 120 such trucks with additional trucks (58 if I recall from the news) now brought in to assist. Because of the ice formation and the expected temperatures, it will probably take until the weekend to get everything open and keep it open. The problem they've been having is that they get something open and then it winds up getting shut down again because they haven't been able to get back to it before it goes back into the tank.

We could not get out of our driveway today because of the ice that had formed from the freezing rain on top of the snow. We've been in this house 11 years and that is a first. We spent about six hours chipping away ice up to an inch or so thick and shoveling it off to open up the drive. And I can feel it, I'm hurting in places that I didn't know were there.

We have been lucky in that power outages are minimal in the immediate area. There was big effort to move to underground utilities and it seems to be paying off. Don't know about Huntsville and power outages, we may not hear from Doug for a while if they are having problems over there. Long time members may recall the time that "Sparky the Squirrel" got into a transformer at a substation and took out power to almost all of downtown Huntsville. That was just one squirrel, who knows how much havoc can be created by a big storm (by our standards) like this one.

But all of this is OK because it looks like we could have a couple of days of top down weather next week.

Steve, Don and All,
We got about 5", but the temp has been below freezing since Saturday evening when the snow began. We have not had mail or UPS delivery for 3 days. No newspaper either. Kids are sledding down the hill in front of my house so I've gone the "back" way out of the neighborhood. The Jeep found a few slippery spots, but I managed to get off the mountain OK. Left the LR in the garage. No need to take a chance some idiot out to prove he can drive in snow will lose control at the wrong moment. Steve, the Ar*enal has been shut down for two days. Been a while since that has happened. Back to work tomorrow though. Mini vacation is over. Spent the evening disassembling one of my carbs and cleaning all parts with lacquer thinner. What do I do with the left over parts??

How are ya Steve?

YaYA so sorry to hear about 6"of snow. Real snow fall is said to be about 3'deep. Like what we had late last year.
