Triumph TR6 - Tach drive gear

Hi All....I am replacing my tach drive gear in my distributor with a new one. Do I need to grease it or is it lubracated by oil from the oil pump.
Thank's Peter B.

I don't see how it gets any lubrication during operation. As a rule, I would apply assembly lube to all mating rotating parts, including the drive gear. I use Lucas oil stabilizer as a lube since I don't add it to the crankcase anymore (that's a story for another day). Don't use grease; engine oil would be OK too I guess.

Hi Peter
I've got a NOS distributor in my collection of goodies and looking at it there is no way I can see that this can get any oil from the oil pump, so it must rely on initial lubrication. What are the new gears made of as a matter of interest.

I thought those were not available. Just wondering where you got it.

Hi Ron.. the gear is NOS so it is plastic with a metal stem. Doug ...I found a small stash of them at Obsolete Auto in Sarnia Ont.

Hi Peter
If the gear is plastic it shouldn't need lubrication, but I think I would put a little grease on it just to be on the safe side
