Triumph TR6 - Temp. Gauge or Sender?

Last year with a new thermostat my temp gauge read straight up at normal operating temperatures. This year the gauge barely reads 1/4 after complete warm-up. The outside temps were still quite low so I thought maybe the thermostat was stuck. After a replacement the gauge still only reads 1/4. Is there a way to check if the sender is faulty, does it read different resistances when hot and cold measured with a multi-meter? I don't even want to think about a faulty gauge ($$). I know the new thermostat works as I've measured the temp of the coolant in the radiator header tank after a good warm-up and after the thermostat has cycled open and closed.

Chris- Did you make it to the ABFM at the Van Duesen Gardens this year? On the temp sensor, they do operate by resistance. I havn't the slightest notion about how much. You can also replace the sender from a parts store. They are cheap and fairly universal. Good luck

Don,
I didn't make it to the ABFM. I hear it's quite a show, though. Living on Vancouver island it gets to be quite expensive to go to meets on the mainland. I usually reserve my one mainland show to the All British Run to Whistler later in the year. If you've never driven up that way I highly recommend it. The drive is beautiful and Whistler village gets transformed with ~200 cars invading the walkways of the village. Luckily there are plenty of shows and runs here on the island to stretch the legs of the TR.
A new temp. sensor runs about $30cdn, I think I'm just going to replace it and see what happens. I was hoping someone would know the particular resistances of the sensor as I'm just one of those poeple that HAS to know how things work.

Chris,

Disconnect the wire from the sender unit and 'earth it out' the temp gauge send should after a minutes read hot,if not maybe the needle on the gauge is sticking, the wire from the sender is damaged or the sender unit is faulty or your voltage stabilizer{does your fuel gauge work ok} is faulty.
