Triumph TR6 - Temp Sender Gone Bad, or Just Cool Outside

I'm having the exact same issue as posted in the following archived post below.

Temp is less-than 1/4 after warm-up. Using new antifreeze (50/50 with water) & Water Wetter.

The gauge does move higher after the car is warmed up & turned off. I replaced the thermostat just to be sure, but the one that was previously in it looks to be fine.

Maybe it's just too cool outside?

Last year with a new thermostat my temp gauge read straight up at normal operating temperatures. This year the gauge barely reads 1/4 after complete warm-up. The outside temps were still quite low so I thought maybe the thermostat was stuck.

A way to test whether your gauge is working is so:
With the car running, remove the clip from the thermocouple on the water pump. Ground the lead to the engine block. If the gauge goes to full high temp, then the gauge is working and your problem is elsewhere. With thanks to Fred MacEakern.

PJ: That's about where my '72 runs on all but the warmest days. These cars do seem to be very sensitive to outside temperatures. I'd say just worry if it goes the other way.

Hi,

I've had the same "problem". At the hottest day still only between 1/4 at 1/3 of the temp meter.
If you want to be sure of the working of the meter, just pull the wire loose at the temp sender and ground the wire, turn on the ignition and the temp meter will (when working and not stuck) read FULL after a few seconds.

If it's not boiling over, you're doing well.

PJ--You didn't say what the rating of your T-stat was, so I presume it is the colder (160) variety. Suggest you get the 185-degree unit put in. The engine is designed to work most efficiently at the half-way mark on the gauge. If you already have the 185 T-stat in, then something is amiss with the sender.
