Triumph TR6 - Thread Pitch

Does anyone know what pitch the bolts are that attach the rear fender to the back of the B post? Is it 1/4-20 or M6? When I took the old fenders off, the bolts were rusted to the back of the pillar and broke clean off when I twisted them. I have replaced both sides now and celebrated my Sunday by hanging the new fenders and door to check the fit.

No way they are metric. Almost everything on the 6 is fine thread except things that thread into aluminum
Would that be front of the fenders?

They are certainly 1/4-28nf as noted by Don... I just checked my tube in the garage.

Rob, Are you sure they 1/4-28 and not 1/4-20? 28 sounds like a very fine thread for this application.

Turns out you're right Don, that thar thingy in my girag is a TUB.... but it still requires 1/4-28nf bolts for the wings and mud shields etc...

Tom, the general rule for automotive use being that most parts are always nf while bolts and studs in soft metals are nc threaded. Fine threads hold better under vibration and torque more precisely (thus all engine bolts are nf), while course threads will not strip as easily but will loosen much more readily.

As Don, et. al. commented, the bolts you want are set screws, meaning the threads run all the way to the head; 1/4" X 3/4", 28 TPI, TRF Part # HU706.

Just returned from 2 balmy days in Detroit. The weather is killing me. Just need to finish the battery tray and rear valance and the major rust will be gone. Then the body will coming off the frame. i would love for this to be completed by summer for the convention in Valley Forge which is only a few hours from my house.
Doug - I think I am going to use stainless on the screws since this is a major spray area. I have to chase the threads in the nuts on the back of the B pillar because I soaked the inside of the pillar with 3 coats of industrial rustoleum (plus used several of the wrong pitch bolts in one of the holes) which buggered up the threads.

Tom,
check the archives for fasteners and see some of the discussion about using SS. It's generally softer than galvanized steel unless you pay for the higher tensile strength, but so what? For most applications won't matter. It WILL matter for stress related and safety application such as the drive shaft, engine, steering, etc. Steve Pike has commented on this quite will.

Send me your email address and I'll share a SS listing all the fasteners (most anyway). I'm replacing almost everything with SS (except Safety related) and have several good sources of supply. Email me at dbaker04ATaolDOTcom do the usual with the address. BTW, for the wings, a little company in the UK offered a complete set of fasteners that was just too hard to resist, even though all of the necessary sizes are readily available in SS except the captive nuts and the acme bolts. I have been unable to find those anywhere. Good luck. Chasing the threads may require a tap so make very sure you have the correct TPI for each application. There are taps for cutting threads and taps for chasing threads. The latter is much cheapers since it does not have to cut deeply.

Don, I have McMasters/Carr's catalog and I have not found the captive nuts in SS there nor the Acme screws in SS.
