Triumph TR6 - Timing???

Ian from IND runs at 16 BTDC?!?
I'm playing with the timing now and find better starting around 4 ATDC but rough running during coasting. Fred says don't go by the book, just tune it til its right. Any other thoughts? What do others have their TR timing set to?

8 BTDC static, but that's with vacuum advance. At idle it is 24 BTDC.

Also, the outer ring of the balancer can slip if the the rubber is old and deteriorated. Since the timing marks are on the outer ring that could give a false timing indication.

4 degrees BTDC on strobe at idle with retard vac connected.

Wow! All BTDC. Doesn't this cause a lot of back firing throuygh the carbs? I'm still getting a lto of serious burping at both BTDC and ATDC which I'd like to eliminate.

You should not be at ATDC firing while timing if your timing marks and all else is OK.

Don't know where the problem is but unless you get that nailed down its kind of hard to sort out. If the damper/balancer is loose as Brent mentioned and they do may be problem. But everytime you check timing you would have a little bit different reading? Your 0 timing mark should coincide with TDC on the compression stroke of #1 cylinder. Tricky without proper tools but you can crank over by hand and find #1 comp. stroke and rock to find aprox. TDC. Then look at mark?

Virtually all engines I have ever worked on no matter what make are timed BTDC? And thats a few.

Mines at about 8 - 12 degrees BTDC at 1000 rpm then it ramps up and off the scale as the revs climb. I burn premium and the only detonation I get is if I give it a bunch of throttle in 5th gear at under 2000 rpm. I just turn the distributor until the idle stops increasing. Then turn the idle screw back to about 1000 and she's just perkin.

Timing is only part of the equation. How fast the spark advances with RPM's should also play a big role in performance. This is done by changing the advance springs in distributor for lighter ones. Lots of experimenting is usually needed. I've had lots of luck in other make engines but haven't attempted yet in my tr6. I saw some springs on the Cambridge Motorsport website but they are in England. Anyone have them here in the USA I could buy? Has anyone else tried this? This little modification can transform other cars like you wouldn't believe. Can make tire shredders out of dogs.

Once again, a veritable quagmire of information. Thank you all. I'll experiment with 4 BTDC and alter it until I hear the right notes mixed with decent acceleration.
