Triumph TR6 - Tires for TR6

yeah, I know, there are zillons of posts on this subject, but here's a new twist. I understand that Goodrich is offerintg their Silvertown in a Redline Radial size 205/70R15 at $241.00 USD each before shipping. Does anyone have any experience with this tire? Ride, handling, endurance, etc.?? Thanks.

Can't help you on the Goodyear tires Doug but I just bought 4 redline Universal vintage radial tires out of Hershey PA for $207 each. I was in Toledo for the weekend last weekend so I had them shipped there for $56. I haven't put them on the car and won't now since she is put away for the winter (I know- you are thinking - what's winter?)but first thing in the spring I can let you know what they are like.

I had Coker tires before but was un happy with the ride (may not be the tires- we will find out) or the life (30000 miles and they are practically bald). I had one wheel we just couldn't balance and it vibrated pretty good at 29 and 58 mph. The Universal tire was recommended to me over the Coker.

Michael,
Thanks for the info and yes, winter, I do know. Despite being in the South, the topography here is such that we get a really deep (for us) cold spell every few years. One Jan, we had 10 days running where the temp did not make double digits (F of course). Not like that with which you contend, but enough that it reminds us, that there are really 4 seasons after all. I'll check into the Universal vintage but will probably still be studying it well after you've gained some experience in the Spring so look forward to your comments then.

And Don, much less expensive than re-shoeing the other LBC (LR).

Hi: 2 years ago I bought 4 Pirelli Centirato P5 tires from a local tire dealer and included 7 stock wheel rims. The best rims went on the front and so on. Decent tires in my evaluation as long as you keep tire pressure up to 30 PSI cold. The size is P205/70 R15 96T. Traction A, Temperature B. At 90 MPH they hold the road well.

Michael, were those problem child tires Coker branded in a 185-15 size? I have heard others complain about those.

Looking at the Coker site, they offer two different 15 inch, 205 section width redlines from Goodrich. One is a 205/65, too low of an aspect ratio for a stock look on a TR6. The other is a 205/75, which is a closer diameter match to the original 185-15 tires fitted to these cars than the 205/70-15 that many people (myself included) run on these cars. Doug, I bet this 205/75 is the tire you were looking over. Other than what I've seen though, I have nothing else on them, haven't used them, don't know anyone that has. Are you familiar with the term lab rat? Here's your chance to lab rat them for everyone else.

While $241 a pop is "bit of a premium" over the price of a blackwall just for a red stripe, if you really want a red stripe tire, then the premium is worth it. After all, what is the price delta between blackwalls and redlines relative to the total amount of money and effort sunk into the car? My guess, it's a mere pittance.

Steve -Quit being so pragmatic

Yep Steve

The 185-15.

Don, not so much trying to be pragmatic as much as trying to be realistic about different approaches that can be taken. If I were truly pragmatic, we would not have as many cars as we do with four of them being two seat cars.

Regarding those tire prices mentioned by db, we're talking about a bit over 1 kilobuck out the door. If we were to look at blackwalls in that same size, there aren't that many choices out there and there's nothing among those choices that I would fit to a car. This throws us into 205/70-15 territory. A reasonable number of good choices there and we're talking about pricing in the realm of .6 to .7 kilobuck out the door. Considering the amount of money and effort that gets sunk into a restoration, that .3 to .4 kilobuck delta between the blackwall 205/70-15 and the redline 205/75-15 is a noise level difference if somebody really wants redlines instead of blackwalls.

So we know that db is interested in having redlines, what we don't know is whether or not he's interested in being a lab rat for the rest of us.
