Just to let you know that I spoke with a fellow named Bill (owner?) at Diamondback Classic Tires in Conway, NC and placed my order for 4 Redlines for shipment to Florida. I'll bring them back with me in April at the end of my snowbirding deal.

He suggested that I consider the Hankook AS4 over the Cooper Fury in part due to the partial ownership & quality influence by Michelin. He thought the tread pattern was nicer looking and that the tire was of a higher quality. It has performed very well for his customers and he seemed confident in it as a tire for TR6's (205/70/15). He likes it run at 34 to 36 lbs.

See page 10 in their online catalog. Cost: $172USD per tire plus $66 UPS shipping to FL.

Ken, I checked with Canada Customs last year about bringing tires home when I was returning from Florida. They informed me that I was not able to bring tires across the border. They were used tires so I don't know if that makes a difference. Let us know how you make out.

I just checked the Canada Customs website and there are no restrictions on tires posted there. I intend to declare them under our personal exemption so I do not expect a problem. We'll see. Thanks for the heads up.

Ken, I imported my TR6 from Mass. a couple of years ago. You wouldn't believe the run-around and difference of opinions. I was extremely frustrated and spoke to a Customs Officer directly. Her recommendation was that for a definitive answer, the safest advive is through an Officer directly. Web sites and recordings can sometimes be less than correct.

This was just my experience. Let me know how you make out.

Still haven't figured why there is this fascination with redlines.
Over all the tires are a turn in the wrong direction when it comes to handling.

To each is own, I guess.

I agree with you fully on the ORIGINAL Michelin red lines. The tyres Ken talks about are NOT Michelin made . They are new technology tyres.

The purpose of red lines to to keep your TR looking original and quite frankly, they look very nice on a TR6.

I just like 'em Don. I've seen many a fine TR6 without redlines so I can't defend my choice rationally... it's all subjective. Heck, owning an old British car may not be rational. Mine came with redlines in 76 so I'm staying with the period look but moving to the latest tyre technology. My current redlines have lots of tread and look good but the dating tells me it's time to put safer rubber on for those vroom vroom days to come.

If Canada Customs goes on spin cycle over this John I'll let you know. No one in Canada makes these things and few import them so I don't think there should be an industry protection concern. We'll see.

Just make sure you get enough rubber. No 185 series please.

Hi Ken, emailed james at diamondback asked if they would make me a set of redlines from the new dunlop SP60/205/75/15 which are available in whitewalls? His answer was yes, if the tires are available in WW and they can get the tires. He said what they would do is blacken out the whiteline reverse the tire and install the redline.He has not got back to me on price yet.I fowarded him the tirerack web page. The tirerack site is the best site,for buying tires/tyres, for ratings, reviews,specs,customer surveys and price.I decided this time, to buy a modern radial vs bias/ply, tire made in the USA OR CAN. I made the mistake of purchasing the out of round ,bulgeing COKERS made in another country.The coker is a good tire for trailer queens!,not for drivers

205/70/15's for me Don. Seemed to have been the consenses a few threads ago.

The 75's may stand a bit taller Ian and fill the wheel well better but I'll go with the 70 series. Re the Cokers... I have no personal experience but I don't think Diamondback likes them and they've been in the game a long time. Good luck with your order. We'll show & tell in spring. Ken

I just caught up with your post Ken. Thanks for the update & keeping me in mind. Well I am still interested in modern red lines, as I have to put new rubber on the TR this year. However I am not going to pay $200 plus per corner, plus another $60 for mounting and balance. Heck when all is said and done it will cost > $250 per corner...not in my budget.

I may have two options for you John. My old redlines 185/15 (which I drove on from BC to ON last September) or a set of 205/70/15 blackwalls coming off a Buick Regal. Will contact you directly. Ken

I strongly recommend that you explore the literature on "old" tires. The admonition is DO NOT use any tire 6 years after date of manufacture regardless of tread etc.

Can't argue with that Doug however I read this kind of "admonition" in Trailer Life / Motorhome magazine regarding seldom used RV's & trailers not cars. The same articles speak of often used vehicle tires 'lubricating' themselves internally and staying healthy versus those tires on vehicles that sit 9 months or more per year.

I recall that on a thread a month or two ago some of the guys were saying that they run on tires (redlines) that may be 10, 20 or 30 years old. Not sure what's / who's right.

For peace of mind I'm going with new rubber. Could be a waste but I'll feel better. Having said that I did drive 4,600 kms last September on 10 or 20 year old Michelin Redline tires that performed beautifully.

Update...

Not to start this one up again but to say that I have received Diamond Back Classic Radials' catalog which makes for some interesting reading. My tires arrive February 23 so more on that later.

Other than some great old car ads, pix of classics and rods, and of course all their tire configurations, owner Bill Chapman writes about his company, stress on rims (bias v radials), the sell off of old name brand tire molds, tubes, why he does not make tires but rather adds the redline or whitewall to current technology tires, his process for doing this, speed ratings, aspect ratios, UTQG ratings, and other neat bedtime reading topics. If the tires are as good as they promote I'll be one happy camper. Check their website if you have not done so. www.dbtires.com

Hi to All

-17C without the windchill this morning....going up tp +6C on Sunday (could be a tidy day in the garage).

Anyway my pennyworth on the tyre debate (y or i could be a debate in its self). In the lastest edition of 'Classic Motorsports' there is an article "Ti(y)res for your classic" and its all TR6 and Michelin X verses the Vredestein Sprint Classic.
