Triumph TR6 - TR at BJ

I see a '71 TR6 sold at Barrett-Jackson for $28,600. It did look really nice. I was particularly impressed with the stance. They seemed to have the ride height fore and aft just right, which one doesn't often see.

Did you note any special modifications Tony or was it basically stock?

Looks top be pretty stock, other than the walnut dash and some chrome under the bonnet. The lack of flat black on the tail would be non-standard. Should the top have had reflective tape in that year?

There were a few things that jumped out at me if we were to look at this as a "no expense spared" concours restoration for a North American market car:

1) As previously noted, no black paint on the rear panel

2) Fascia panel is incorrect and way too glossy, this was the era of matte finish fascias

3) Hood (top) should have reflective strips. I could somewhat overlook this if it were a really nice fabric top as opposed to vinyl, but this is a vinyl top and if you're going to go vinyl at least use the correct reflective stripped vinyl top

4) No black finish below side mouldings

5) Incorrect rear wing transfer. For 1969 through 1972 it should be the "TR6" outlined letters as opposed to the stylized Union Jack transfer. For Signal Red, that outlined letter transfer should be white.

6) Chrome valve covers were used in 1969, but all later ones were painted silver. Other bits are chromed that should not be.

7) Aftermarket steering wheel center, possibly aftermarket steering wheel as well but not enough detail in shot to determine

8) Missing breather oil screen for crankcase vent system

9) Half-assed mounted aftermarket coolant overflow tank as opposed to the standard fitment overflow tank

10) Incorrect windscreen wipers for a 1971 car

11) That's the darkest tan interior that I've ever seen.

12) If this was a supposed no expense spared restoration, it seems to me that at the very least they could have fitted the front bumper properly instead of angling it a bit funny.

Overall, it looks to be a rather nice car and it wouldn't be that hard to set right, but to state "no expense spared restoration" is a bit over the top when a dozen things on it can be nailed without really trying hard or seeing the car first hand.

Very detailed review Steve

I see what you mean on the bumper. I guess that if they can get $28600 at BJ for all that missing and no overdrive, mine may fair not too bad. I think the wipers are right but on the wrong side? I believe my wiper arms are original and they have the kink in one. I choose to put that one on the RHS.

Michael, at one point I had been tapped to be a concours judge at some VTR events for these cars which gives me a bit of a leg up when it comes to knowing what was fitted and when during the production run. While things in the rules changed somewhat over time, in general update/backdate of items that are not safety specific is going to cost points during concours judging.

I can recall sometimes having owners very upset when points were deducted because they had fitted the nice wool napped carpet from an early car in their late car in lieu of the nylon loop carpet used for later production. At the time, the rules required a complete loss of points in a particular category for incorrect material fitment. I'd explain that I didn't blame them for what they had done as I would have done the same but it still ran into some nasty arguments at times, so I'd just send them to the chief judge. The chief judge would back it up, but it still left some hard feelings. Later VTR changed the rule to where fitment of incorrect material would only result in a loss of half the number of points for that particular category. It still made for some hard feelings, but at least it was easier to overcome since only half the points were deducted.

I haven't done any VTR concours judging in several years and can't speak to the current rules.

Not a fan of BJ either Don. They've single-handedly inflated the "collector car" market beyond the reach of the average car guy. When Craig Jackson bullies the bidding audience when he thinks the bidding is too low rather than let the auctioneer handle the bidding; makes me sick!. He's an arrogant piece of work anyway but I wish I had his money :) Did a '71 have the little square British Leyland badges on the lower front fenders? Nice car overall though but the kamm back really needs to be black; just looks so wrong all red. Was down in Florida playing golf with the gators for a week while everybody else up here froze in the "Arctic Vortex" with rolling power outages. Left St. John's Jan 4th at -19C and arrived Orlando at 82F same day. Five rounds of golf in eight days and otherwise just enjoying the weather and looking at BMW's - thinking of a nice, used 3-Series sedan to bring home some day. Got to love that overall while the missus stayed up here enduring the weather. Did I mention I went with my buddy who has a house in Davenport and it was an invitation for one only to play golf and other manly pursuits. :)
Cheers,
Bob
Pic of Fred and I at #18 with the Providence clubhouse up on the hill. Temp only mid-seventies that day but still livin' the good life. Oh, did not see a single TR6 in 8 days of driving around.
