Triumph TR6 - Tr6 Bonnet adjustment

I've just looked at a Tr6 that I'm interested in purchasing and have noticed that the front bonnet protrudes past the headlight/front wings by about 20mm/3/4". The bonnet protrudes over the top of the front valance by the same margin. My question is, is there much room for adjustment of the bonnet forward or back? I've looked at the front of the car and I do'nt think its been in a prang. Any suggestions please.

DW,
There is some adjustment in the bonnet hinges. I'll check tomorrow and post, but 3/4" suggests that something is wrong rather than poor adjustment.

I agree with Doug

I don't think there is 3/4 in or 20 mm of adjustment with just the bonnet hinges. I think maybe half an inch. The outer fenders may not be properly aligned. And I would think the current owner would have aligned it as best as possible so I am not sure that you will get it aligned without some major removal and realignment.Factor that in the price. I am sure you can get it aligned but the question will be how much work.

The question really is .
How does it fit at the windshield piece. If that is OK the the wings are really fubar

I'll check on the gap between bonnet and windshield but if this is ok, can the wings be moved forward to fix the overhang problem? I've also noticed over extension hinge dings on both doors. If door straps have broken sometime in the past or when doors have been opened with force, that could point to the wings not having been set properly. do you agree?
DW Nitschke

Not necessarily so.
I have one on my pass. wing from a door not strapped

Checked gap between windshield and bonnet. Drivers side 10mm Passengers side 5mm therefore with the bonnet adjust that problem should be fixed. Bonnet
overhang on drivers side 6mm, passengers side ok. However upon closer inspection I noticed the gap between top of L wing and windscreen panel a lot greater than R, which indicates to me that this car had a prang sometime and the wing was not quite aligned properly. Is it a major job to take wing off and align it properly? I believe its a bolt on job, is that correct?
DW Nitschke

No, they unbolt
It might scare you to death when you look under neath, though.

According to the Moss manual ( exploded diagram ) removal of the wing appears straight forward. Any hints or tricks of the trade to look for in this removal? Any suggestions please.
DW Nitschke

Never had the pleasure just know quite a few who had the pleasure

The TRF blue book probably also works well.
You'll need the Bentley manual if you buy it.

Removal is easy. 3 bolts at the bottom of the sill. 7 or so where the bonnet is. These are easy to access.

One at the door. 3 to separate the front valence (where the bumper is) One at the headlight. These are in behind the wing.

If your door/fender gap is good it may be more than just re aligning the wing.

Any chance for pictures?

Don't even know if he has bought the car yet

This is the least of your considerations in whether or not to purchase this TR6.
The bonnet can be moved back to make it look better. TR6 body pannels never had a perfect fit.

I would not even consider removal of the wings. You are opening up too big a can of worms!

I would say the bonnett has been off so the question is WHY?....engine rebuild?? You say it probably has not been pranged so why?

What is the asking price? What does the body look like and most important how is the frame??

DW,
Finally got to the shop for awhile last night and checked the bonnet hinges. You have a slot 3/8" long on one portion of the hinge; none on the other end. Depending on the diameter of the bolt you use (the default is 5/16"x7/8" (HU807P) for the bonnet attachement and 5/16"x1" for the front stiffener attachement (HU808)) you may have 1/16" to maybe 1/8" play, but probably no more than that. From your other comments, it does appear that the car has seen some upset. Suggest you measure the diagonals of both the bonnet AND the outer wings tip to tip to determine square and what's out where. There will be "some" adjustment in the outer wings, but very little, maybe 1/8" overall which, along with the hinges, may give you 1/4" with which to play side to side, but you're not going to get 3/4" out of all this.
