Triumph TR6 - TR6 Carbs

I'm doing some work on a friends '72 TR6. It's been sitting for about 15 years in a garage. He wants to get it back to road spec, then sell it. I looked it over today and things aren't horrible. It needs brakes, new fuel lines, filters, change all fluids etc..
I've never noticed that the TR6 had stromberg carbs (just like my elan). The carbs probably need a good going through, however they seem to be a bit complex if I remember correctly. I'm a pretty decent mechanic however I've never done a set of Strombergs before. So my question.
Do I A. do it myself
B. pay a shop to do it (pricey I'm sure).
C. Buy a set already rebuilt (where do I find these)
D. Replace with another type of carb (any ideas on this, SU's or webers?)

Meanwhile I'll be searching the archives.
Thanks
Bill

The Z-S carb is really not all that difficult to overhaul. Get yourself a Haynes carb manual (covers Weber, Z-s, and SU carbs. Available through Moss, TRF and Victoria British as are the necessary replacement parts. You will need a means to balance the carbs and a special tool for adjusting the needles. Not particularly expensive tools. I prefer the "synchrometer" for balancing the carbs. Again these are available from the big three. All have online catalogs. mossmotors.com the-roadster-factory.com or victoriabritish.com. You have a ready source of help amongst the TriumphBBS members.
Good luck

Bill,

In addition to Mike's suggestions, perhaps there is a TR club member near Oakland that could help with a tech session on the carbs? The 72 Zenith's aren't complicated at all. You'll want to order a rebuild kit for the pair ($35 or so). In my experience, you'll have the most trouble fiddling with the bypass valves (I blanked mine off) and worn throttle shafts. The cLassic symptom of these issues is the inability to dial an idle rpm.

Google New York's 'Joe Curto' if you're instead interested in buying a set of rebuilts.

Good luck and keep us updated.

Bill-The tech articles on the Buckeyetriumph website (www.buckeye.org/) are world class on carb rebuilding and other components. Too bad some of the pictures are missing.

Thanks for all the comments, maybe I'll give it a go.
I couldn't find the carb article on the buckeye triumph page.
I have a tool for balancing carbs.
What does the needle adjustment tool look like?
I didn't think they had adjustable needles.
thanks again, and I'll still be reading all suggestions.

Bill-Sorry about the Buckeye articles not being available. They were removed at the request of the author. They may be available using the "wayback machine". The needle adjusting tool is inserted in the damper tube after removing the cap. It is available from the major suppliers for about $10. The needles on a 1972 should be adjustable.
