Triumph TR6 - TR6 Carbs... what brand is correct?

Can anyone tell me which carbs are correct for a 1976 TR6? Strombergs or SU's?
Ken S

Hi,

Originals were Strombergs for all TR6 (69 to 76)
Marc Girardin

Thx Marc. That was my guess but I'm on a steep learning curve.
Ken Shaddock

Ken
This sounds like your first lolly pop!

Yes Strombers are OE. There are some who have swapped out Strombers for more reliable/easier to deal with SUs.
Rick C

Does the car have MIATA seats in it?
Rick Crawford

No Miata seats at this point. Knee replacements are popular these days so maybe I'll get a little taken of my femur, tibia, and fibula.

SU's are easier to tame... excellent.
Ken S

Ken, "chop and channel" may be coming back in style.

Check out the carb articles on this site.

Nelson Riedel's 3 part series for the 250/TR6 carbs is the best overhaul guide I found.

I rebuilt my carbs and it made a huge difference. Be sure to replace the bypass valve diaphram if it feels stiff at all.

B Selby

Anyone know what SU means and who made 'em? I had them on my 62 Volvo Canadian 122S a hundred years ago but never inquired.
Ken S

Stuarts Union. Rumor has it that they were developed by a plumber.
Ed Bell

Skinners Union, named after a pair of brothers who manufactured them.
Simon.
Simon R

Kewn
Simon has the correct answer...not sure where you got Stuarts from Ed.
Rick Crawford

Skinners Union: Here's a site about these amazing little fuel gobblers...

Ken Shaddock

Sorry, that should be Ken not Kewn.

Ken do not let those MG owners try to persuade you away from a TR

We ALL know a TR6 is a much better car.
Rick C
Rick Crawford

Skinners Union it is. My late night memory isn't what it used to be. (I knew it started with S.) I have just finished cleaning my '69 TR-6 carbs (Zenith Stombergs)and they are a lot more complex than the SU carbs on my MGA but they seem to work just fine.
Ed Bell

Exactly Rick... the last of the great hairy chested sports cars as someone once said. The MG would be okay for the wifey though eh!

Bob (Selby):
Thanks so much for the link to the carb rebuild. Been looking for that for a while. I have the Strombergs out on the bench and lost the Nelson Reidel articles I had printed and only had Part 1. Although I can do the job without them, this makes it so much easier. I even e-mailed Mr. Reidel's last posted address but did not get a reply. I know, I know, it's probably on CD2 but my d*#n PC crashed again and I lost CD2 before I burned the download! Tip for Stromberg 175 CD rebuilders: I destroyed the diaphragm in the bypass valve during disassembly and the kits are about $15.00 each CDN delivered so be careful with the bypass valves! The correct carb for the TR6 - how about that Holley 2 bbl that comes with the supercharger from Moss for only $3500.00 US$?

Cheers,
Bob

Check out this little twist to the old Strombergs.

for the next extra 1K bill I come across....

On rebuilding my Strombergs I found the temperature compensator stuck in the closed position. A little scrubbing with solvent and a pipe cleaner fixed this. I also took the time to calibrate the compensator as described in Mr. Reidel's articles so they both open at 140 - 145 deg F.

Does anybody know where a new temperature compensator cover can be purchased for a "reasonable" price?

B Selby

Hello,

You can SU HS6 from Volvo 142, but very rare find now...

Luckily the MG boys do not come over to this BBS and snoop to often:)

Bob (Evans)...starting to be too many Bobs around here:) It must be the weather out there Bob that keeps crashing PC on you. CDII is still available. contact Alistair or myself for user name.
Yes you guessed it. The mentioned article is on CDII. Complete I might add along with glossy black and white photos.

Dale - Thanks, I have the old yellow somewhat brittle ones with the cracks around the screw holes. They stay on OK but I saw a white replacement on a carb on ebay. It just would be nice to replace with a new one, at a reasonable price, not $15 each.
B Selby

B Selby.....Anything I might have around would be in the "Old yellow somewhat brittle etc...." catagory.
Not much help.........Sorry.
Good luck.
Dale.

Triumph says that they upgraded from SU's to ZS's in around 1963 (The TR4). They denied that it was because MG invested into the SU company. I believe Triumph found out (1) that MG was getting them cheaper then Triumph and (2) Triumph did not want to buy parts that were made by a company where money eventually found it's way into MG pockets.

I forget the make but I have heard that there is a modern downdraft Japanese Motorcycle carb that will work as well

B. C. Wilson

I thought original "carbs" were Lucas, all the others were after thoughts for the North American markets place.....
Mitch Smith

Mitch. According to Roger Williams' book "The Essential Buyer's Guide" for TR6 the carbs were Sromberg Side Draft 175 1 3/4".

Lucas made the mechanical petrol injection for the PI CP models November 68 to October 72 and the PI CR models October 72 to February 75.

CC models Nov 68 to Oct 72 and CF models Oct 72 to July 76 were carburetted using Zenith Strombergs.
