Triumph TR6 - TR6 shopping in western Canada
I'm looking for a TR6. Preferably in good order but I'd consider anything for the right price. I check eBay and trader.ca regularly but if anyone can suggest where else I might find one in western Canada, I'd appreciate it. I'm in Saskatoon and Edmonton. TIA, Rod. |

Rod, My first piece of advice: don't buy a car you can't look at first. Case in point: Two years ago, I walked away from a car here in Boise priced at $7000, and recently saw that car go on ebay for over $13000. The issue was a hard hit in the right front that buckled the firewall and caved in the hinge pillar, followed by a shabby repair job. (looked fine from the outside!) Hook up with a local Brit Car club, find someone that is familiar with TR6's, as there will be someone that would be happy to go look at a car with you and advise you as to condition...most car guys I know just like to go look at cars anyway, helping someone get a good car is a plus! Check out the Buckeye Triumph website, some more good info on the VTR (Vintage Triumph Register) site. Finally, about the club thing; don't be afraid to join a club or even be a 'drop-in' because you don't have a British car yet. Some of the best advice and the most knowledgable people are right there at your disposal! I have seen a few people that were hesitant to join our club, because they didn't think their car was up th the standard. Most of these cars are a constant work in progress, and that's part of the joy! (I think) Happy hunting, and hopefully, soon... happy moToRing! Rod |

Much appreciated -- all very good advice. I've had a TR6 in the past -- a '70 -- but had to sell it about 4 years ago. It's tiime for another! Rod. |

Rod Check out DrakesBritishMotors.com out in Kelowna BC. Their website is pretty good and if something really tickles your fancy you can always tour out for the weekend from Edmonton, enjoy some sun and wine and have a close look before you buy. They dodged the forest fires last summer ... only just ... so there shouldn't be much risk this year. Time it right over the July 3-4 weekend and you can see the Rally in the Valley while you're there. Check Obcc.ca for info. Have fun. SID PS Life is too short to live in Edmonton ... !! |

Fabulous. Someone even farther north than me. I bet the geese don't even go that far. I agree about Drakes. They're origianlly Saskatchewan folks so you know they will be helpful and friendly. If you owned a TR, you may have been a member of the Saskatchewan British Car Club. They have one project car on their classifieds: http://www.sbcc.ca/sale/sale.htm Good hunting (TR, not goose) Tony |

Rod The fellow who sold me my TR6 may be able to help you. His first name is Rod; but I can't remember his last name. I'm at work but I do have it at home. He wheels and deals in British cars. An honest guy; originally from Wales. I believe he is affiliated with the Northern Alberta Sportscar Club. I originally went to see him about a Spitfire he had forsale. I spotted the TR6 in his shop and quickly forgot about the Spitfire. He seems to know how to find cars and is always hauling something home. Jane or Ken with Miles Import Auto in Edmonton know him well and could probably give you his number. If you would like to email me I can get you his last name and possibly a number. Doug Sid Let me guess; you're from Calgary. |

Great advice -- thanks to all! I bought my 1st TR6 in Saskatoon around 1993, moved to Edmonton in '96, sold it in 2000, and am in the process of moving back to Saskatoon. I left before SBCC was formed but will certainly check them out. I know Ken Miles in Edmonton -- he's worked on my Saab. Great mechanic -- I recommend him highly -- and will ask him about another TR6 next time I'm in Edm. The other lbc mechanic I've dealt with in Edmonton is Bob Hawkins -- but not since he moved from 103 Street so it's been a while. Had a look at Drake's website -- very nice selection. I'm torn between a '69-70 and a later '75-6. My 1st TR6 was a '70. Any thoughts out there about pros & cons of early vs later cars? Cheers, Rod. |

Rod PRO: The older TRs ( I am '71) have far less pollution junk on them. Specifically the air pump....one less thing to go wrong. CON: the con is that you will probably need to weld in the extra support plates for the dif in older TRs. Or maybe it has already been done which is a bonus. Good hunting and welcome back to the flock:) Let us know what you find. Rick C |

For me, the high back seats on the early models are definiely pro. Con is that seat covers are not as readily available. Pro, as well, might be the high compression motor in the early models. There seems to be no information on the horsepower rating of the high compression engine, that is, all the non fuel injected engines are rated at 106 or so. Does anyone know if it was, in fact, a more powerful engine? Tony (with a '69 and lovin' it) |

Tony I did not have difficulty getting seat covers...especialy since I am shadow blue interiour. Yes I enjoy the high back. Not sure on compression ratios for older TRs. I am under the impression that as the pollution control stuff got added HP went down. May also have reduced compression to meet CA emissions standards. Rick C |

Thanks, guys. I agree about the high seat backs being much preferable. Having never driven a smogged TR6, I'm not sure how different they are. BTW, anyone seen the '75 from Windsor that's on eBay? Certainly looks nice. Would look even nicer in my garage... Rod. |
