Triumph TR6 - TR6 Wheel Trim Rings

Hi All,

I'm trying to replace my original aluminum trim rings. I don't imagine there's a way to fix all the deep scratches. (anyone?)

Does anyone know of a supplier that provides brushed aluminum TR6 trim rings? All the vendors seem to offer stainless steel only. Maybe they're better?

I'm trying to avoid the "chrome look". Does anyone own a set of the stainless steel? Do they look like the original aluminum or are they closer to a chrome appearance?

BTW - just ordered a new set of the centre chrome medallions & emblems from a UK vendor on ebay. They're supposed to be from the original supplier to Triumph.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Fred,
As I recall the trim rings came out in '72 and were the aluminum type..not sure when they switched over to chrome. The UK cars apperently never were offered the trim rings at all.
When I bought my 75 it had aluminum rings which were in ok shape but I came across a new set of chrome ones for $100 I couldn't resist..I like them better.

Fred--No one supplies the anodized aluminum rings, and you're correct, the deep scratches would be impossible to remove. You could strip them with oven cleaner and re-anodize with a kit, but that would be a lot of work. I have a set each of the aluminum (need refinishing) and polished stainless rings and prefer the aluminum. Actually, I think the steel wheels have an attractive "deep" look without any rings.

Fred, when I purchased my car, I tried taking some fine wet-sand paper to them and then buff with a polishing wheel. Even though I was able to remove many/most of the scratches, it was just taking too long and the the dents would still be there.

Instead, I went to Canadian Tire and purchased a can of spray paint (lot's of choices including brushed aluminum) and the results were very satisfying. I plan to buy new chrome rims, however in my first year of ownership, I spend my money on making the car safe. Cosmetics come next.

I have a set of the stainless rings from TRF. My originals were just old and didn't brighten up enough when I tried to buff them. I remember the TR6 & early spit originals were brushed finish w/ later cars and the MG's having smooth trim rings. Anyone?

The modern repros' are smooth and shiny but not chrome bright. They look like the trim rings found on 70's-80's American and Japanese cars w/ styled steel wheels. I thought they would be a bit too garish but I like them. They are fairly well made and they highlight the wheels diameter which I think is one of the TR series best features.

Applying a brushed finish to a new set would be a fun way to gamble $100 or so.

Fred-I got a set of repacements for my 71 from TRF and Rick C. noticed that they are not as wide as the originals. I did not notice until then, but now it bugs me, thanks Rick!

What are friends for???:)

No need for dispare Don. Everyone with the new SS rings is in the same boat.
Personally, I like the SS better than the original.

It was nice to sit down and have a wobbly pop with you and Ignatius.
