Triumph TR6 - Transmission fluid

I have drained the tran. fluid for my Tr6 that has been off the road for 18 years. What is the best fluid to use? Also, what grease is used when replacing the release bearing?

It's recommended to use a good quality 90 weight gear oil in the gearbox and differential.

Recent discussion indicated that some people had had problems with the overdrive (if installed) when using heavy oil such as 90 weight in the gearbox. I use Castrol 20/50, same as in the engine, on my 75 TR6 which does have an OD fitted. This was universally used by MGB owners for their OD equipped cars. If you don't have an OD, then 90 would be per the manufaturers recommendation. You can search the archives for this subject.

And if you have OD then do not use Synthetic oils.

On conventiional gear oil, do not use anything in the gearbox that has GL5 on it. The conventional stuff that is labled GL4/GL5 is still GL5, use GL4 only if using a conventional gear oil. The chemical make up of the GL5 allows it to take very high loads, but that comes with a price as it has a tendency to eat up all the brass bits in the gearbox.

If it is an OD box, use a non-detergent 20W50 or a non-detergent 30 wt motor oil. I use Valvoline's 20W50 non-detergent racing oil in mine.

If it is a non-OD box, a sythetic such as Redline's MT (75W90) is good choice. I know a few people that prefer the MTL (75W80)over the MT, but I just don't have a warm fuzzy about that. Given enough time to get some data, it may prove out that the MTL is fine also. I do know that they say the shifting is much easier using the synthetic but it is for all the same reasons that it isn't a good idea to use synthetic in an OD box.

I just located some GL4 85W90 gear oil. It's StaLube brand and found it at NAPA. It comes in a white 1 gallon bottle, for about $18.
