Triumph TR6 - Transmission gear shift vibration on slow down

Recently I have noticed a much stronger vibration in the gear shift when I have completely let off the accelerator particularly in 4th gear. I don't remember it having so much vibration. It is almost like it wants to pop out of gear-- but it doesn't.

While a nuisance now, I am wondering if I am heading for a tranny removal and overhaul. Any comments or experience? What was the problem and how was it solved if you have had this happen.

Thanks for any and all advice, comments.

Mike,
Possibly some wear in the transmission mount allowing the unit to move and so cause the gearshift lever to vibrate.

Do you know how old the mount currently is? They lead a hard life under there.

Pete.

Hello,

Have you checked for faulty U-joint or gearbox mounts, prior to suspect internal problems?

Cheers,

Thanks for the feedback.

Tranny Mounts are brand new . U Joints are new. Replaced in 2005.

I haven't looked under the car at all as of yet. I was soliciting ideas before I did anything. I will look this weekend if time permits.

Just drive the D#$%^ car and enjoy her.

You will hear and feel a new noise around every corner.

Do you think the guy who bought the car before us cared about the noises or vibrations?...no....he just loved to drive her.

Thanks Rick for your "to the point" advice.

Coming down this way for a tour?

The prop shaft might have one or 2 issues.
1: it may be out of balance.
2: the UJs might not be synchronized to each other after you replaced them..(There is a proper word for this and if Chris Trace chimes in with the word I promise to write it down and remember it for life).

As for a tour...I am always up for a tour ( as long as it is not 3 hours:). Maybe it is the Petryschuk's turn this year for a summer BBSBBQ.

This vibration started recently. (this year). It was not happening the last 2 years since I put the car on the road so I don't think it is the prop shaft since that should have happened from day one and I would expect vibration during acceleration and deceleration. It is only noticable on full deceleration (foot off the accelerator- no braking) Letting up on the accelerator for slower decleration does not have the same amount of vibration. The car doesn't vibrate, only the gear shifter.

Many years ago, in my 68 Spitfire, I experienced the tranny jumping out of second gear on deceleration. It was a broken retaining clip in the tranny and I had to pull the tranny and replace the clip. Since the TR6 is not jumping out of gear, I am hoping I am not going down the same road.

I never bothered to get under the car this weekend so I have nothing new to report from that end. It still runs great and unless I can't drive it, I don't want to get into disassembling it or as Rick suggests panicing.

I will speak to Nancy about hosting a BBS BBQ. Sounds like a great plan.

what is the best manner to synch up the u joints and or balance the drive shaft...

My baby has a very slight "rattle" that comes up through the gear shift/tranny sometimes...but not always!

I am wondering about the shaft since i didnt know there was some specific manner to hooking it up and likely i didnt do it right

Michael-Here is thought to ruin your day. If your trans. is pre-1973 and uses the bronze top hat bushing on 2nd gear, it is possible that the brim has broken off and is causing excessive end play in the main shaft. It is a pretty common problem and left unattended can cause major damage.

The prop shaft will slide apart at the spline (which should be lberally greased). The spline is NOT keyed. At either end of the 2 halves is part of the UJ. It is "C" shaped. Both Cs should be on the same plane when the 2 halves are slid back together. With both ends in the same orientation, they are synchronized.

The inner and outer sliding joint assemblies (rear axle shafts) are also a spline assembly but are keyed so they can NOT be reassembled out of sync.

The prop shaft is factory ballanced. You would need to take it to some sort of auto (speed) shop to get it ballanced again.

Hi All - I have a similar question/issue. On two isolated occasions I have had the trans pop out of 3rd gear. Both incidents were on the same road under the same condition (sounds strange). I was going down hill decelerating from about 55 MPH in 3rd gear, perhaps off and on the gas and it popped out. Is this a sign of internal wear or something to be concerned with?
