Triumph TR6 - Triumph Radio

My 71 TR6 has what appears to be the ORIGINAL AM/FM Triumph radio. Nowhere in any literature (Parts manuals etc) do I find any reference to this part. Does the original item have intrinsic value? Are parts such as knobs etc available for it; if so from whom? What are other good choices for a suitable sound system for this car? Now, I know some die-hard purist is gonna tell me to just listen to the engine and the wind rushing along, but for SOME occasions, a decent sound system may be of interest.

DB,
It is my understanding, that the vast majority of North American TR's, arrived on shore here without the radio in place. And that once on shore, the radio, if installed, was put in by either the importer, or the dealership.
Also, there were several different manufacturers that supplied these units to the NA market.
There were a few OE radios, but for the most part, it is most likely one of the units put in after the car reached these shores.
I saw somewhere an article that mentioned the most reliable method for identifying an OE unit, but I do not have that link handy. Anyone else seen this?
It seems that it said the OE was a LUCAS unit.
My radio has "Triumph" on it, but is a Japanese supplied unit, not from UK.

Hope this is helpful,

Original UK radio was Smith same as the gauges. One speaker AM only. Not shipped with cars for export.

The US distributor sold many aftermarket upgrades badged Triumph. In Canada it was hit and miss with the individual dealer.

Most American Cars of that erra came with AM only radios AM/FM was an option. For that year Corvette the FM option was $178.00. A 454 big block upgrade was not much more so with few FM stations mostly talk and classical what was the upgrade of choice?

Unless your 20 stay away from the fancy screen new stuff. Don't look right in a classic. I like mid price Alpine myself and they will fit in almost any enclosure space. Put out good music solid base with no extra amplifier. A large installer will have bezels to make it stock looking.

If you want "power" the amps fit tidy up against the tank cover in trunk and the speaker box can be custom built across package shelf. Use a seperate circuit from battery. If you need the amplifiers you will also need a high output alternator. Will burn stock one out in a day or so.

Listen to the music comming out of the pipes at the back of her.

But then when you do want a good road tune, a simple unit with built in CD player will work.
I found I had to enlarge the hole for the radio..not noticeable after though. A good pair of speakers on the back deck and motor-on.

PS are you not getting ahead of yourself:)???

Saw boxes of radios at a Canadian surplus supplier marked TRIUMPH...should have bought the lot for $15 a piece.

In the US, the radios were dealer installed options on all but Jaguars on the BL cars. The radio kits offered to the dealers through the distributor channel were primarily made by Motorola. Because BL was slow on the uptake when it came to advanced features, such as 8 track players (hey, remember what years we are talking about here), many dealers also installed units from other suppliers outside of the BL food chain.

I installed a radio with CD changer from a Honda Odessy. All black with simple knob and button controls. I think fits in very well. At same time I recovered the radio/dash support with the vinyl recover kit from Revington. Looks very nice. You can get a Honda radio from a junk yard but it will not work until you get the anti theft code from the car or a Honda dealer.

As a side note to this thread, a AM/FM Leyland radio from a TR6 brought 370.00. Go figure.

On e-bay of course.
