Triumph TR6 - Trying to find worth

I'm trying to find out what my car is worth. It's a 1971 TR6 it was my gandfathers. It only has 55,000 original miles on it. It's got a black leather convertable top and is saffron yellow (i believe). Does anyone know where I can find out how much the car is worth? And where is a good place to sell the car?
Teresa

Teresa,

I can't think of any one particular place that can give you a value. You need to look at places where these cars are being sold. like ebay which is typically the lower end of the price range. Then look at Hemmings which is typically high end of the range. You could also consider an appraiser who will give you a value for insurance purposes. After all that you will have an idea of the value of the car.

If your car is in great original condition with original paint and original equipment and the low miles you say then it will be worth the upper end of the price range.

Actually selling it and getting the price you want is another story where I have no experience. Maybe someone else may help there.

Hope that helps.

Running a pre-owned dealership and owning a 71 Saffron yellow tr6, I can give you my 2 cents worth.
Couple issue of concern a buyer may have:
1)The color isn't very popular. It's more like a mustard color.
2)It appears that it's an east coast car which may have more rust than cars from the west coast.
A lot of buyers will buy a Triumph with mechanical problems but tend to steer away overpriced cars that have rust so, adjust accordingly. It's easier and cheaper for us Triumph people to repair or replace engines, transmissions etc.
That being said, the positive is that it is a tr6 that has the more desirable engine and if it has overdrive, wire wheels,or a hardtop, it's a added benefit. Adjust your price accordingly. Low miles is always a plus and if you can substantiate it with documentation, you'll get more interest. Was your grandfather the original owner? Some buyer's like that!
Here is a websites that will give you an idea of value.

Thank you so much for your help. My grand father apears to be the original owner. I found the bill of sale from the dealership although the dealership no longer exists. The car isn't a mustard yellow it's a more canary yellow. I don't know what the acctualy color is. I think I will prabably get an appraiser to take a look at it. the mechanic I took it to said the only thing wrong with it is that the starter needs to be replaces. Other than that it's almost like new. There's a little wear on the car but no rust that I can see. Thanks again for all your help!

Sell it!!??? Sell it!!??? My God are you Crazy??!!! 55k original miles, one owner, leather top and you want to sell it??!!! What more can a Grandfather give? Keep it!! Drive it!!! Love it!!! AAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK, with said and out of my system, ohhh, about $8-9,000. Sight un seen. I saw an add two weeks ago for a complete frame off resto asking $18K. To get a real good price the car has to be exponetially good to get the better price.
skikir

Based on ebay, and your description, I would guess a bit higher than skikir guessed. If it is really original and really has no rust, it might be worth as much or more than a restored car to some collector. However, I don't think they came with leather tops, so it probably isn't all that original.

I bought my current car about 3 years ago. Based on what I saw then, and making some allowance for inflation, I would guess somewhere in the $12-13,000 range in the South Florida area.

But I really don't know. Whatever a buyer will pay is what its worth.

JL Bryan has brought up a important point. "Whatever a buyer will pay is what it's worth". Usually (not always)I've found ebay to be kind of inflated and not what's really happening in the market place. If you put it on ebay, you may just get all the money or not.
The important point is this. If you price it too low, you'll sell it fast and may have left money on the table. If you price it to high, you may scare some serious buyers out there and waste you advertising dollar. Just be realistic when pricing it.
My personal opinion is best quoted by skikir

"Sell it!!??? Sell it!!??? My God are you Crazy??!!! 55k original miles, one owner, leather top and you want to sell it??!!! What more can a Grandfather give? Keep it!! Drive it!!! Love it!!! AAAAAAAGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Good luck...

I don't think she meant "real leather top".

Theresa, there are lots of guys here with lots of experience with these cars. If you can post some pics somewhere, get into some of the dark corners and underneath as well as the normal ones, they should be able to give you a reasonable estimate.

An appraiser might even find you a buyer, though. So that's good too. But we'd sure give you a second opinion.

Ebay...I've got a real nice 76 and I'm probably asking below market value for it..any one interested drop me a line.
