Triumph TR6 - Tuned Fuel Economy

As a general indication of engine tune, I'd like to poll members owning a STOCK O/D TR-6 as to their fuel economy. Yesterday I completed a 172 mile run in my stock TR-6, 140 miles of which were clocked at 65 to 70 mph with O/D over rolling western PA terrain and the rest around town without O/D. The hood was up. The average economy was 27.5 mpg. Thanks.

That sounds like good mileage. I will let you know what I get..I am stock with O/D.

Rick O; That sounds like really great mileage to me. I just did about a 150 mile run and averaged about 25 mpg on my 72.
Joel

'72 w/od and stock I average 24-26 mpg. in a mix of highway and suburban cruising, with a more suburban mix it goes as low as 20-22. I don't have #'s for straight highway but as soon as I do I will post. Your's sound good though.

Thanks for the info Rick C., Joel, and KBD. I hope others post too since I think the results should help others determine there general state of tune.

After posting the question, I realized that my six is slightly modified with (1) K&N air filters, (2) Ansa exhaust, and (3) ducted 'ram' air from the rad shroud to a twin-snout air filter housing. I don't know if those minor changes add up to much mpg-wise.

OK I confess...K&Ns also.. I remember u talking about your "Dodge" conversion a while back. I also remember reading something along the line that u have to be careful that you are not ramming to much air at the carbs (at high speed). The Ansa system I think might only lead to a heavier foot on acceleration for the sake of the sweet sound. I presume your twin snout is the original housing and u are probably getting more air to the back carb now. Just retorqed head and will do the Clikajust today. Sounds like rain till next Tuesday....bummer.

Ha Rick
Noticed you are main pic page 2 of the TR REGISTRY- TR6. Very nice lookin Rick.
How come more of you TR lovers have not posted/registerd your babies??? 3 other fine examples...William P, KBD, and R&E Warren.
P.S. Rick we both forgot to mention Pertronix above...OOPS!

Rick Crawford

I forgot to mention petronix, and also K&N filters no fancy ram air though just pancake covers. Stock from there back, I remember seeing pictures of that type of installation somewhere was it ever stock?
60 degrees and rain.

Wow, didn't think this thread would turn into confessions for everyone! UR right, I also forgot the Pertronix I on my six.

Rick C. -Thanks for the compliment; everyone should get theirs on the FREE TRRegistry as well. Also, when you due your lash cliking, let me know if your #6 intake valve has the same amount of motion as the others when you push your six in gear.

KBD--The twin snout setup apparently was used early on (69 only?) and included a special hose attachment plate that was presumably cut in to the rad shroud. I remember seeing pics of this somewhere (not Bentley). Current collective wisdom is that this setup was tossed out on emissions issues (cool air results in more emissions due to a denser charge) and, of course, to save $$$.

Rick O, Just completed 175 miles mostly suburban maybe 30 miles straight highway at 25 mpg. End of confessional

Gee whizz guys. My 72 seems to be the most stock of any of these and gets the worst mileage. Maybe because I don't have OD. I thought 25 on the highway was pretty good. Oh well, back to the drawing board.

I will gladly let u know the answer to: "let me know if your #6 intake valve has the same amount of motion as the others when you push your six in gear" but I must confess......HUH????
Now we are all allowed to take communion.

Rick C. I was in a hurry with the description, sorry. All the rockers, when properly lashed, should have the same amount of up and down motion, right? When I adjusted my valves, I noticed that the range of motion for the #6 intake valve was much less than the other intakes as I pushed the car back and forth. First I thought the pushrod was bent, but I removed it and replaced it with a used one. I was just wondering if the limited motion was right (I don't think so). The car runs fine, it just bugs me.

Joel, For a great story and a great testament of TR6 fuel economy go to:
http://www.vtr.org/people/streeter/lbc/stories/vtr-97/there-and-back.html over 4600 miles of mixed travel in a '71 at 27 mpg.
I think anything in the 20's, high or low, depending on travel is pretty damn good.
Keith
KBD Dixon

Apologies it is a '70 with O/D.

Rick-On long trips, cruising at 2800-3000 rpm in OD,30 mpg is possible. The stock needles are pretty lean in this area, and the plugs show very light tan. Town driving is around 20mpg.
