Triumph TR6 - U-Joints...again

Hey Y'all,
Got all the U-joints in the drive shaft, BUT one on each end is not far enough into the yoke to permit the cir-clip to fully seat in the groove!!?? I've mashed, pressed, cussed a bit and hammered the hell out of it, but neither seems to want to bulge any further into the space. It seems as if the spindle is too wide for the available space. One is on the drive shaft yoke on one end; the other is on the severable yoke. In each case the other three are fully seated. There is not enough room for a needle to be caught or at least I don't think so. I checked carefully as I squeezed the cups in and at last glance all the needles appeared to be in place. I also liberally doused the cup with grease to make sure that they'd stay put.

Any constructive advice (or not) will be much appreciated.

Well, I hate to say this, Doug, but any time this has happened to me it has been a needle out of place.
Good luck.

Thank Tom,
Rick Crawford made the same observation. I'll remove the two offending cups and start over!

Doug, it sounds like you have to spread the yoke abit for it slip into place. You might try a small turnbuckle (they are usally used for pulling things together but they spread things just as well).

Chris, et. al.
Thanks for the guidance. I guess Rick and Tom are right...a dropped needle. The hole in the yoke is so tight that it takes a good deal of pressure with a 8" C clamp to get the cup pressed in that there is ample opportunity for one of the little suckers to slip out of place. Found two broken in one cup and one was split!! Now that's gotta be a lot of stress to do that!! I'll whup this problem yet.

Your root cause could be what Chris says. You are using way too much force to press the cup in. It could very well be binding.
I wounder if a small straight edge ( thin enough to slide through both yoke holes) would show any miss-alignment?
Will a cup slide into the hole you are having a problem with then not press into the other end (reverse which one you put the cup in first)? If this happens then " Chris is your uncle".

Hmm-Doug is still a needle short of a full cup.

Actually Berry, several short now. I also need some lead in my pencil, but that's another problem. If anyone feels pity they could send me about 1/2 dozen 28/cup size needles and maybe 3/4 of the 25/cup size. Save me from buying a couple of new U-joints!@!

'Course, this adventure is not yet finished so I may need a lot more before I'm finished:)

Doug-So far I have been unable to find my stash of u joint parts, they were probably thrown away when I moved a few years ago. The idea of spreading the yoke to get the circlips to fit is very creative as I have resorted to grinding the circlips if they wouldn't fit in the grooves. Happy hunting.

Berry, spreading the yoke makes sense if it's actually been moved out of alignment, but that's one big lot of metal and I would be surprised if a C Clamp even with a cheater pipe, could generate enough pressure to bend about 3/4" of steel. I think that I'm just suffering operator error. With practice it'll get better, I'm sure:( Won't know for a while. No shop time tonight or tomorrow night and will be in DC all of next week so if I don't get 'em done on Saturday, they'll have to rest another week!!
