Triumph TR6 - Upper arm bushings

Can you remove the upper control arms without touching the spring and lower arm. I need to change the upper bushings. Is there anything to look for while I'm in there.
Robert

I would think that it can be done, but have not done it that way myself. Just off the top of my head, you would still need to remove the shock and replace it with a large threaded rod that has a large washers and nut at the top and a plate with holes for the shock mont studs and a nut to use at the lower spring pan. Compress the spring slightly from it its nominal constrained condition. The loosen the bolts at the ball joint, swing the upright out of the way and tie it off so that there is no strain on the brake line. Remove the upper arms and have at it.

All in all, I don't really see where doing it as described above would be much less work than just getting that spring and all of its dangerous potential energy completely out of the way. I've see the results of a spring coming loose during a strut change out, it was not a pretty sight. If it was me doing the work, that spring is out of there.

Joel-Fear not, the upper control arms are not under tension from the springs. I had the same concerns as you did, but found that spring tension wasn't an issue. A small jack should be used to support the lower arms. The control arms do have to be removed from the upper ball joint and are "handed",so should be marked and returned to there original location. Also, check the fulcrum pin for severe rust and lube the pin with moly or teflon grease if urethane bushings are used.

does anyone know if you can mix the upper and lower arm bushings. I mean as far as material used, poly on the upper and rubber on the lower and vice versa. What anyonys experience with the poly bushings, prople tell me thay ride alot harder thn the rubber.
robert

My car rode great but I decided to replace all the rubber with poly last winter which I did and I must admit I noticed no difference in ride and handling. I don't regret replacing them but I was a bit suprised at not seeing any difference.

Can you explain what you mean by "handed". Is there any way to mix up the 2 upper wishbone arms on the same side. Thanks for answering what may be a silly question.
JW BRAW

He means they have a left and right side...so make sure to put them back where they belong. as I recall it might only be a problem if you have both sides off at the same time and mix them up.
If you look at the MOSS parts book the diagram is pretty clear
