Triumph TR6 - Vehicle History in Canada

My fellow Canadians...

Are any of you aware of a method for tracing the original selling dealership and subsequent ownership history of a car? I know where my 76 TR6 was going back to 1990 but that's as far as I've gotten.

Since it is a BC car I have tried ICBC without success. They say that ownership information is private due to the FOIPOP Act hence other than liens, collisions, auto theft, etc. I'm stuck.

I could ask for help using Vancouver newspapers but that's a crap shoot and expensive.

Any thoughts?

Ken, there is an organization in the UK that can tell you the date of manufacture, how you car was trimmed, date it was shipped, port of entry, original dealer, etc. They even tell you the the name of the frieghter it was shipped on. The cost to register your car is about $50 I think. Havn,t done it myself yet. Problem is, I,ve been trying to remember the name of the organization and I can,t! Somebody here must know who I,m referring to. You just need to send them your commision number.

Hi Rob/J.G.

I have applied for and received that documentation. There was no dealer information on mine but its a neat report just the same.

I was hoping there was a way to get history since the car's arrival in Canada but that may be impossible. I expect that even if I were to advertise in a LBC hobby mag in BC where I believe the car spent its life until 2008 I may not reach the owner unless he/she was an enthusiast who buys this type of magazine. It's a long shot... maybe I should try that.

Thanks guys.

Yes, it might be a longshot Ken, but won't hurt to try. I ran across the same problem with ICBC trying to track the history on an MGA i own. If i can find the previous owner and get him to ask for a copy from his previous owner and so on and so on you can track it that way, but people move, get married, change their names so it really is a crap shoot.....

good luck, and let us know if you have success!

Try searching the archives as the organization you seek I am sure has been a post in the past. It may take a few difference key words to find it.

Through one of my parts suppliers, Octagon Motor Group in Vancouver (you may know them Mitch) I was given this link. I'll try an ad in their newsletter. Looks like a well run club.

Mike... maybe this is one of those references buried in the archives. If not, this note will put it there.

My BMIHT Certificate tells me the car was shipped to British Leyland Motors Canada Limited, Halifax in May 1976.

For those of you who have this certificate is that what yours says re destination? Is this simply the destination "port" for all of these cars back in the day before they were allocated to a BL Dealer?

Ken, you could also try a message with these guys, you never know...

Hi Mitch... have placed an ad in the BC Triumph Registry and have emailed the webmasters at both of these clubs.

Thank you for the suggestion.

If I'm not mistaken all Leyland cars that came to Canada in that period ended up at British Leyland distributors an Fairview St in Burlington, ON and were then allocated to a dealer

Interesting re the BC stance on giving information on previous owners. In Ontario you are required to obtain and provide a "Used Vehicle Information Package" to the purchaser when selling a car privately. This package identifies all the previous registered owners in Ontario. My 75 TR6 also started life in BC so the history only went back to the time when it was first registerd in Ontario.

Hey guys... Thanks for all of your suggestions. I'm afraid I'll have to rely on the long shot by way of ads I've placed on club websites - BC Triumph Registry and the OECC. I've not had a response from VictoriaMG.

Someone I chatted with suggested I contact the BC Motor Vehicle Branch so I wrote 'The Office of The Superintendent' to no avail... I received a quick dust off and a referral to ICBC again. In a second conversation with ICBC asking only for the original selling dealer they blew me off again despite the likelyhood of the business name no longer existing.

Barry... interesting point. Sellers of used cars in BC are not required to do much of anything relative to assurance that the car is genuine. The ownership transfer takes place in something called an AutoPlan storefront. They are everywhere in Vancouver... as common as Mom & Pop shops. I assume they are private businesses representing ICBC, the state run auto insurance corp. BTW, I had to buy insurance from ICBC to drive the car back to Ontario even though I had proof of an international State Farm Policy on the car. The whole bit seemed loose and unofficial to me.

On my own I had a vehicle search done by CarProof which showed no history of theft, collision, or liens. That is all they offer.

Hey Ken:

I saw your post and recognize the car reg. from a previous thread. I'm almost 100% certain this was the car my uncle bought for me off the lot in '76 for my 16th birthday. Unfortunately, I was a little reckless back then and after few days running round the farm with it, it end up at the bottom of the pond. Took two years for the swamp to drain out but then my other uncle Darrel hauled it up and clean out the cow crap and, sure 'nuff, got it started. By then he won't let me drive it and he gave to to my sister/cousin who never could figure how to get it out of 1st gear. Somehow she still managed to loose her license for speeding (and solicitation). The car finally ended up at the country fair at the rock'em sock'em derby were the poor old thing WON 1st PRIZE! After that I kinda lost track. Perhaps maybe thats a good thing ....

Thanks for the laugh BC. That's the story I'll go with so I can watch potential buyers sniff the car.

Barry Q... I just confirmed with MTO that the Used Vehicle History Report we must have to sell a used car in Ontario does not include ownership / odometer information from other provinces. MTO only provides history from the time the car is registered in Ontario. It's a buyer beware deal on out of province purchases.

When I cited FOIPOP as the reason BC would not provide information, the MTO staffer was surprised since they too are bound by FOIPOP (federal). They said that they provide previous owners names only hence they believe they are still compliant.

I think I'll stick with Mr. Chamberlain's story.

I recall many a time (and this is no joke) driving to Montreal and seeing a car hauler (not a huge one) carrying 3 to 4 high end cars/sport cars all that had been in a "right off" accident heading for a body shop in Quebec. At no point after they came out of the shop was it necesary to say "this car had been in a accident". It was simply an auto that looked "very clean".

Hey Rick... I just heard back from MTO re my suggestion that they obtain files from other provinces' vehicle registration records to protect the public - just as they do for folks buying Ontario based cars. They politely told me to buzz off.

Ken

PS. I flipped their note to my MPP as a final grumble and mumble. &*%#!
