THANKS BILL. I AM AT WEB TV AND CANNOT ACCESS YOUR SUGGESTED WEB SITE. IF MEMORY SERVES, THERE ARE TWO CONNECTIONS AT BACK OF VOLTMETER. IF TRUE: THEN, A WHITE WIRE TO EACH CONNECTOR & BLACK TO BODY GROUND?????
j hinerman

There should be a white and a black wire coming out of the loom, connect them to the two terminals on the back of the voltmeter, it doesn't matter which way round.

Can you accept e-mail....no laughs, do not know much about web tv....will send you the schematics.

According to schematics, there is 2 Ws and a single B. The 2 Ws are ganged together as one connection (at least on my ammeter set up). Black is ground. Call me stupid but if a volt meter is hooked up backwards (+ to- and - to +), will it not operate backwards? I think you will find a + terminal and a - terminal on the back of the meter.

RICK,,MY WEB TV BOX IS HTML ONLY. NO PDF OR ETC. FILES. THIS IS WHY I COUULD NOT ACCESS ABOVE WEB SITE. THANKS

Well there is the old method...I can fax a copy of 76 schematic. Or do you have a friend who can accept e-mail and print it for you.

it doesn't matter which way round on a voltmeter?

Really?

Jim Deatsch

So James state your case?

Voltmeters are usualy positive negative and marked same. Don't have a TR volt setup mines amps so can't say absolute. Many cars gages have a sensing circuit that shift -/+. Usually newer though?

My way is look for zero read on gage first? Look for a positive or neg. sign on back. Not there? Hook up. If the gage pegs neg. Reverse. No big deal. Not a gear drive and have never seen a damaged gage from reverse?

One tip I can't remember the alternator or battery positive wire ever not being on the left with the gage up facing gage as mounted on any car if that helps.

American TR carb type wiring of course. Ron and Roger may be have diferences due to left hand drive? But I can't see Smith or others changing things much?

It doesn't matter which way round the wires are there are no + or - on the back of the gauge, I also tried it on a Smith's voltmeter in my MG [easier to get at] and it works either way and there is no + or - on it either.

Could have fooled me. I'd have bet anything that polarity was important.

How else will the voltmeter know what the voltage IS?

Example:

My Fluke digital multimeter is a pretty 'smart' device. If you reverse the leads it will read bass ackwards (assuming you're looking for positive voltage) so it ain't THAT smart.

I've never seen a voltmeter that wasn't marked + and - .

Jim (opinions are like left ears, most folks have one)

I forgot to mention that the Goose is Positive Ground. That is, he always returns to the ground.

How's that?

I knew this was coming back so I tested 3 voltmeters before I left the shop today. All are GMs, so again I can't say for Smith as I don't have one.

Only have the Smith amp meter from my 72. I don't think it cares about polarity most don't but didn't have time to set up a test for that.

2 are designed to fit in printed circuit dashes are marked pos/Alum/Gnd. Alum to g makes the backlight go on.

Old one still GM with one copper and one tin post marked only G likley for goose. Think its from a farm truck..:)

Anyway all voltmeters 0 pegged if hooked up wrong and read Ok otherwise. No damage caused.

Again don't have a Smith voltmeter only an ammeter.
