Triumph TR6 - Water in my boot!

After a heavy rain, I get moisture in my trunk, so I have the mat out drying in my shop. My trunk seal looks to be in good shape so I'm stuck wondering what to do or where to look for leaks and since the trunk is so small, I can't get in there while someone holds a hose over the trunklid. Any ideas?

Aaron,

Is it condensation?

The first thing I would check would be the fuel filler cap neck seal.

Haall Jim he ain't old enough to be dry behind the ears never mind his boot...:)

2 places to look if your rubbers still flexible and body seam sealers ok would be the the bolt coming up through center of boot. Seen many no gasket rubbers. Will suck at speed. If you have the fibre carpet backer wicks and stays wet forever? Can trick you.

Bottom of channel. Carefully filled top, where's it draining to? Very few bodymen are plumbers. Look for restrictions.

One trick I think I invented is with carpet out use talcum or some other light powder that will stay on a vertical surface. Take a damp rag to the surface first. Whack around powder. Close the trunk soak her and then look for the water lines or drip points? Neat eh.

Tip blast at the back there is suction on the flat back running. Put a syphon type feed on air gun works best more fine mist.

Old Dog to Puppy arre yuh listening son..:) Let me know how you make out Aaron?

Pay a young kid a fiver to crawl into your trunk. Try a spot light first and ask him (her) if he (she can see the light seeping in. Then give him (her) a flashlight in the dark inside to see where the spray from the hose is leaking in.

Don,

I guess it's a good thing we don't have to worry about things like broken bonnet release cable with trunks when we're abusing 5 year old kids!

For us old guys, be sure to write yourself a note so you don't forget to let the kid out when you're done.

Aaron, do you have a bootlid rack? The rubber grommets at the base of those things can go missing, and since the mounting system tends to pull the bootlid down a bit at the mounting points water can pool there and seep in.

Tony - The number associated with my age may say I am old, but at least I don't suffer from "Alka Selzer disease". There I go again. I keep forgetting the real name.

No I don't have a luggage rack (thankfully!) but my last TR6 did (hated it!). BTW guys, for the survey I am 23 years old. Out of college and own my own Mercedes-Benz repair/restoration shop here in Cincinnati but my love for cars extends to English ones, hence the TR6 in my garage. I've worked on Mercedes for roughly seven years and my shop specializes in vintage models. Ok, back to the problem at hand: With Mercedes, tail light seals and rear window seals can be big trouble areas for trunk leaks (no rear window seal applicable here obviously). I have new tail light seals which will go in over the winter. The fuel filler seal is also something that will be replaced because I get a heavy gas odor in the car with a full tank so I think I've got a fuel leak somewhere (tank will come out for checkup). I have a new filler "neck" hose and clamps for that. I think I'll ask my business partner if his little nephew would be willing to help me out on some Triumph diagnostics (he's about five, hehe).

On another note, I have installed my new Moto-Lita wood steering wheel but am still deciding whether or not I like it. The wheel rim is nicely polished which doesn't quite contrast properly with the matte finish of the dash. But since my original wheel was shot (free to anyone who wants it here on the board, just pay S&H) I had to do something. I also got another original wheel off eBay which is in excellent shape as a backup in case I do decide to send the wood wheel back to Moss. I always thought that the only let down of the TR6 interior was the black steering wheel and that a wood rimmed one would look nice (which it does, to a degree) but the non-matching wood tones are a little niggling to me and I'm more of an originality wacko. The saga continues......

Could be spray getting blown through the bottom of the inner and outer rear valances -the inner one rots along its bottom edge leaving a route up into the boot/trunk for water.
