Triumph TR6 - Water Pump

The new water pump I got from TRF did not have a cap for the oiling or lubrication hole. My old pump had the removable pulley; the new one did not. The pully was pressed on. The hole in the new one is open to the elements so I expect that it should be plugged or capped in some fashion, but no plug or cap came with it. I've removed the "plug" from my old pump and will see if it fits on Wen. Is it supposed to fit? Should I have gotten a cap or plug with my new pump? Thanks.

Doug, your not talking about the "weep hole" are you? There should be a hole on the shaft/body of the pump that is supposed to be "open" it would be at the "6 oclock" position when installed.

JT, yes, it's the weep hole as you call it, but if you check the Bentley Manual, you'll find reference to a plug that fills that hole which is to be removed to lubricate the pump periodically. It SHOULD NOT REMAIN OPEN!!!! Lets all sort of gunk into the pump bearings if left open. My OLD pump has a screw in plug. I had the bolt on pulley. No longer available so I had to replace it with a pressed on pulley pump. I do not know what sort of cover the new one should have, but it does have a hole. I have to get back to the shop this week to determine if it's threaded for the plug or if I'll have to thread it or if there is some other "cap" for the purpose of protecting the bearings.

Some older pumps have a zerk grease fitting, some have weep holes...that being said a "plug" on a weep hole makes it NOT a weep hole...think about it... factory Jaguar manuals actually say to put bar's leak in your radiator at service intervals on the 5.3 V-12...BAD IDEA! The chance of "junk" getting in that small weep hole AND going "uphill" are slim to none. The open hole lets you know when the seal has been breached, I don't want to plug it up...that defeats it's purpose.

JT, I think you're right. The weep hole should weep!! Particularly if you have a failed bearing. How else will you know other than the high pitched whine of a frozen bearing right before the belt breaks?? Likley, through a conversation with some of my colleagues here, is that the earlier model pump had OPEN bearings which required lubrication. The latter model pump has SEALED bearing which are permanently lubricated so the hole become...you got it...a WEEP hole. Anyone choose to chime in please do so.

She'll usally "weep" well before she whines! I think your friends are right about the bearings.
