Triumph TR6 - Water Pump Problems

Anyone have any suggestions on why a TR6 would keep tearing through water pumps. I am going on my 4th and can not id what the cause is; too tight of a belt, head gasket, etc. Any ideas welcome.

I am pretty sure I read somewhere that the current supply of water pumps was not up to snuff. I don't recall whether it was the beaings or something else, During my engine rebuild I figured it would be prudent to replace it, but I was advised to keep my original if it was still working. TRF stopped selling them for a while, not sure if they have found a new supplier yet.

AJ,
thanks for the response. I am goimg crazy trying to run this one down, As soon as I think its licked it starts leaking again..Iam hoping it is not the head gasket. Have you replaced yours in the past. Based on Bentley's, its looks pretty involved.

I didn't replace mine, but I took it off when I rebuilt the engine. I don't think replacing the water pump is very involved, so I guess you mean head gasket replacement. I have never done the job on another car, but I doubt it would be any more complicated than another car. Monifolds off, water pump housing off (I guess you could just disconnect things but that would just make the head heavier to lift off) and then hope that the studs haven't rusted to the head. I sprayed the studs/nuts with Kroil every day for a fortnight before I even tried to remove anything and they all turned out no problem.

Hope that makes sense

Shawn. Did you do a pre install run up with it?
DON KELLY

Shawn,
make certain that your pullys are aligned and that your belt has about 3/4" of slack. Remember, v-belts 'grip' by wedging and not through excessive tension. Hope this helps.

Alistair, Bob and Don,
We installed a new pump tonight. We dry ran it once installed per tech tips from Moss. Last pump I did this too only it was done with a bench grinder. The draining of the entire system produced all bright green coolant so no bad stuff flushed out. No leak thus far which is great but I will need to put some miles on the TR to see if the problem was strickly a bad pump. Hopefully this was the case.

The grinder trick would have probably been enough. Did you reuse the coolant?
DON KELLY

Don,
We discarded the coolant even though good and used new. If we would get less rain in Boston, I would put some miles on it. Rain, thunder and lightening pretty much every day and forecasted for the next several days.

Should have reused it.

Don, Alistair, Rob,

So far the new water pump is doing its thing. No leaks after putting a fair amount of miles on this past weekend. Local mechanic thinks I may have been ruuning with the fan belt too tight therefore placing undesirable pressure on the pump bearing.
