Triumph TR6 - Welch Plugs

ALRIGHT. The gear shift lever was going in and adjusted today. The engine going back in finally on the weekend (alot of rain is forcast) and things were looking bright. As I am adjusting the shift lever I notice a seepage of oil out of these off white plugs on the trans cover. OH SH....As I grab for the R.F. book to see what they are and if they are still available I discover they are called WELCH PLUGS. Now the questions to the expierienced ones.

A.Can I take the top cover off without pulling the trans again?
B. How do I get them out? I can't find anything about them in the Bentley bible

Don-The top cover can be easily removed with the trans in place. The welch plugs can be removed by drilling, inserting a sheet metal screw, and prying out with a screwdriver or whatever. Another source of oil leaks in the top cover is the o rings around the selector shafts. Both the o rings and plugs should be available locally. Check out the techincal articles by Nelson Riedel at: www.buckeyetriumphs.org. They cover rebuilding the top cover, gearbox, and OD,and put all of the service manuals to shame. Berry

I had checked out that site already, but did not see anything about the welch plugs. I appreciate the reply.

Berry- Just pulled the top cover off. I see what you mean about the o rings being the culprit. I wasn't planning on rebuilding the top cover, Buttt....I am printing off Reidel's article now and looks like I got some more work ahead of me. Thanks for the help.

On second thought after thorough examination. The welch plugs are between the o rings and the shift forks . Is there something to keep the oil from getting past the shafts before it gets to the plugs and the o rings. the seepage was ,I am pretty sure out of a welcg plug on the side of the cover. I am replacing the o rings anyway and as of now the disassembled cover and it's parts are at a machine shop getting boiled clean. Has anyone ever seen a welch plug leak?

Don-One other thought on the leaky plugs. On the tail section of the trans. (unless you have OD) there is a 1/8" hole about 2-1/2" from the flange that acts as a vent for the trans. If this is plugged, pressure might build up enough to cause a leak.
Berry

Will check for the vent. After rebuilding the top cover ,the testing of the shaft tension was an interesting deal. I took it over to the shop that rebuilt the bottom end of my moter and they had the plugs in stock and they replaced a couple. The motor finally went in this weekend. Yea!!
