Triumph TR6 - Well, I heard it this time...

Go ahead and puff up, guys. It was great weather here - a good day for maybe the last top down drive of the year. I catch a light at the intersection of a highway and one of those sporty Hondas (s 3000 ? I don't want to look it up), red, with the top down, takes off down the highway. Two 20-somethings are in a truck next to me. I didn't hear all the conversation, but the passenger says "I'd rather have one of THOSE" and when I look over he's talking about my car. Another LBC moment....

Took my 6 out last night. I have the entire interior out except the dash, but I couldn't resist (driver's seat is in too). It was just too nice to not go for a drive. I was heading down the highway and a limo pulled up next to me and the driver honked and gave a thumbs up. Another LBC moment too...

No LBC moments around here this weekend. Cold, rain and high winds. But last weekend was one of the greatest in my short TR6 life (5 weeks). All around the Newmarket, Ontario area. Saw 3 different TR-6. On Saturday a red one heading north on Yonge st. and a BRG on Queensville sideroad and on Sunday another red one on Aurora sideroad. Sadly soon will be winter storage time, still hoping for one more good weather day to get some driving in. Can't wait till spring.

Beautiful weather this weekend in CT. My son and I rolled out the 6 and removed the windscreen, rear bumper and 90% of the dash. Getting ready for the tub to fly off the frame. Many "dads" from the neighborhood stopped by to watch the action. Most of them couldn't figure out the business end of the hammer. Their wives have told me they wish their husbands were more handy.

I can't believe I'm writing this. Car is 6 months on the road with new paint (Tahiti Blue-IMHO the best color for TR6), new Bumpers F&R and new Superlites wheels. Its everything I've dreamed of. Everytime I go out and stop someone says something about my car or wants to tell me of their former TR story. I get thumbs up all the time from other drivers on the hiway. At first it was so cool. Now it's almost a pain! I wish I was as attractive as my car.

I've been stripping my TR-6 for painting in a restoration bay at the Auto-Crafts Shop at the nearby US Military installation. (I'm retired Army). I keep it covered to minimize the dust and debris when I'm not working on it which may add to the mystique somewhat, but when I am working on it, I field anywhere from a few (4-5) to many (40-50) comments/questions/want to talk/reminisce/etc. Finally dawned on me to just put up a sign...It's a Triumph...a TR-6...that's a british sports car! Yes, it's in fair shape for the shape it's in. Yes it should be a lot of fun to drive...someday. Yes, it's fast. Yes, it's relatively simple to work on...etc.etc.

LBC Moment #23
Pulled up at Lewiston Customs beside a vintage 70s Alfa coupe. We both roared away after the bridge toll but I left him well behind when I hit the gas. Waved him off at St. Catherines and got the thumbs up from Mustang driver who was attempting to follow. What a riot.

At the lights

- chick in the gen111 chev alongside - "what a cute little car" ...(gee I hate that!)

- guy in the backseat behind her - is it a V8? (me...nah.... just a six)

-chick to her driver - I want one of those..

-guy behind ... does she go? (me...yeah, good enough for me...)

- guy behind... give her a bit. (methinks...thought you'd never ask!)

me to guy behind ...it's all about weight (and that includes me)

Lights green......seven seconds later at 6000 in 2nd, I back off as the V8 starts to roar past....

Smiles all round....or was I dreaming...?

Probably dreaming, Roger. My "TR at the stoplight" story involves a glorious spring day at the last set of lights heading out of town with nobody in front of me. Green light, run it through first, quick shift into second.

Ah, second gear. By far my favourite. The engine wailing that inimitable song, the torque pushing you back into the seat as the tach rushes the redline. The very definition of automotive bliss.

It was at that point that the guy behind me in a Honda minivan got tired of waiting and pulled out and passed me like I was standing still.

Maybe our cars aren't that fast by today's standards when every grocery getter seems to sport 250 horsepower, but the old saying still holds. It's not so much what you do, but how you do it that counts. And nobody does it like a TR6.
